Beschreibung

"Cliff Descent Basics" is a comprehensive guide for climbers and adventurers aiming to master the crucial skill of safely descending cliffs. This book emphasizes that controlled descent is as important as ascending, focusing on techniques to minimize risks associated with rope entanglement and anchor failure. Did you know that belay points, the anchors securing a climber during descent, require careful construction and redundancy? Also, mastering rope management, including coiling and knot tying, is vital for smooth rappelling. The book adopts a step-by-step approach, beginning with essential climbing equipment and gradually building to advanced techniques for complex situations. It covers the construction of secure anchors, the proper use of descent devices like the ATC and figure-eight, and various rope management techniques. Practical examples of accidents caused by improper techniques are woven throughout, highlighting the importance of standardized procedures. The text progresses logically, starting with single-pitch rappels and advancing to multi-pitch lower offs, ensuring a solid foundation for safe cliff descent.

A one-of-a-kind collection including some never-before-seen photographs of the wild and unforgettable WHA from legendary sports photographer Steve Babineau

On October 12, 1972, legendary Boston sports photographer, Steve Babineau, was in attendance for the debut of the New England Whalers. They were taking on the Philadelphia Blazers at the old Boston Garden — and Babs was shooting the action. Fifty years later, he’s still photographing big-league sports events — but this lovingly curated collection documents both his earliest published (and unseen) works and the wild emergence of the colorful, revolutionary, wild, and unforgettable WHA.

In an era when rolls of film still had to be changed by hand and cameras were focused manually, when arena lighting was questionable and images had to be captured through the haze produced by smoking fans, Babineau captured it all: the timeless legends who were finally getting paid, the journeymen who finally got a shot at the pros, the 17-year-old who would go on to rewrite record books, the brawls and goals, the glorious ’staches and flows, the highs and the lows …

Behind the Lens: The World Hockey Association 50 Years Later has the Golden Jet and the Howes, the teams that seemed to change names and cities as often as some players changed wooden sticks, and even the true origin story of that Wayne Gretzky photo that’s become the million-dollar holy grail for sports card collectors.

    Frontline Bodies - Sports and...

    Nicolas Martin-Breteau, Damion...

In Frontline Bodies, Nicolas Martin-Breteau argues that sports are not—and have never been—purely about entertainment for Black Americans. Instead, beginning in the 1890s during Reconstruction, Black Americans proactively used athletics as a tactic to fight racial oppression.

Martin-Breteau considers the work of Edwin B. Henderson, a prominent Black physical educator, civil rights activist, and historian of Black sports. Training Black children as athletes, Henderson felt, would work both to fortify racial pride and to dismantle racial prejudices—two necessary requirements for a successful political liberation struggle. In this way, physical education became political education.

By the end of the twentieth century, Martin-Breteau argues, racial uplift through sports had lost its emancipating power. The emphasis on the accumulation of wealth for professional athletes, as well as sports' ability to reinforce anti-Black stereotypes, had become a political problem for true collective liberation. For a marginalized group of people that has been physically excluded from the democratic process, however, sports remain a political resource. By studying the relationship between athletics and politics, Frontline Bodies renews the history of minority bodies and their power of action.
