Sinossi

Carnival Fun explores the vibrant and globally celebrated Carnival traditions, delving into their historical roots and diverse cultural expressions. From potential pagan origins to its spread through colonialism, Carnival has evolved into a powerful reflection of cultural identity and community spirit. The book looks at how Carnival serves as a historical marker while remaining a dynamic expression of cultural identity. The book examines specific manifestations of Carnival, such as Brazil's exuberant samba parades and Venice's elegant masked balls. These are not isolated events but rather multifaceted phenomena reflecting centuries of cultural exchange and social dynamics. Carnival Fun argues that these celebrations offer a unique lens through which to understand broader issues of identity and cultural resilience globally. Structured across four sections, the book begins by introducing core concepts and etymology. It then explores Carnival traditions in Brazil and Venice, before comparing these to other global examples like Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting shared threads and local adaptations. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of Carnival's socio-political significance, making it valuable for those interested in world history, travel, and cultural studies.

What does retirement mean to you?
Do you feel you’ve seen enough of the world?
As you approach this later stage in life, the thought of travel can feel beyond intimidating—especially for those of us handling chronic medical conditions.
In What If . . . ?, author Roberta Sawatzky highlights the importance of seizing the day when it comes to seeing the world, even and especially as one approaches retirement age. She recounts her personal experience taking a study leave to travel Europe with her husband, focusing on the seven months they spent living in Portugal and Spain as she completed research on leadership in remote and hybrid teams. In a dramatic turn, her husband is diagnosed with end stage renal failure while they are preparing for their trip, resulting in them travelling with a dialysis machine, among other medical supplies.
Despite this and other challenges, from language barriers to locating medical services, Sawatzky and her husband immerse themselves thoroughly in the enriching experience of long-term travel, reaping the benefits of an expanded perspective and deeper self-belief for a long time to come.
In the end, What If . . . ? testifies to the importance of rising to the challenges you meet in realizing your travel dreams—especially as you reach this next stage of life—and just how vital it is not to let anything stop you.

Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion is a humorous travelogue chronicling a trip to Bermuda with friends that captures the essence of Twain's observational style, and showcases his talent for turning everyday experiences into comedic masterpieces. Blending humour, satire, and insightful commentary on people and places, this is a delightful blend of travel writing and humorous fiction.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain (1835–1910), grew up along the banks of the Mississippi River, and his early experiences inspired many of his most famous works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Widely celebrated as America's greatest humorist, Twain captured the spirit of a rapidly changing nation, and his sharp wit, keen eye for human nature, and gift for storytelling made him not only a beloved novelist but also a popular lecturer and essayist.

Twain's innovative style, character-driven storytelling and ability to interweave humour with profound social critique laid the groundwork for modern American literature and has inspired countless authors, including Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Indeed, Hemingway famously declared that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn."

Good Nonsense - A Body in Motion...

A book on what it means to play in a world on fire--of how we move our bodies and brains through the thorny problems life can throw at us. Author Sarah Austin Casson brings us on her adventures around the world and in her backyard, from the high Himalayas of Nepal and the deep seas of Thailand to her backyard dirt trails in Los Angeles and many other places, to explore how we can all play with life's hard questions.
Plenty of us are anxious right now. In 2019, Casson found herself covered in stress eczema, working too many hours as a wilderness conservationist, and sinking under the weight of the world’s hard questions. The hard questions asked, what should we do about our world’s problems and what is my individual and collective role in these problems?
Casson looked around and realized that these questions haunt most of us--and that they always seem to pop up when you’re trying to do something else. They showed up asking about deforestation while she enjoyed a to-go cup of coffee with a friend. Pestered her about lithium mining’s ecological impacts as she opened her laptop to watch a romantic comedy. These challenging questions kept showing up to remind her of very reasonable things to panic about at inconvenient times. They wouldn’t disappear no matter how hard she pushed them away.
Somehow, though, Casson found that these tough problems always seemed more manageable when she moved her body in nature. As she ran, hiked, and dived, she found she had the mental space to move beyond repetitious panic and start playing with these questions. The key to these thorny problems seemed to be not just in her mind, but in her body itself.
Casson realized that these questions don't go away but that we can handle them better. We can play with them. The best way to play with them is outdoors while sweating--physically and mentally.
