Beschreibung

In "All Taut; or, Rigging the Boat," Oliver Optic weaves an engaging narrative that serves as both a thrilling maritime adventure and an educational exploration of nautical principles. Utilizing vivid imagery and authentic dialogue, Optic skillfully depicts the challenges young sailors face while emphasizing themes of teamwork and perseverance. This work not only entertains but also serves as a window into the 19th-century American youth literature, reflecting the era's fascination with seafaring and the romantic ideal of independence on the open water. Oliver Optic, a prominent figure in children's literature during the late 1800s, drew upon his own experiences and love for the sea to create stories that inspire and inform young readers. His background in education and passion for travel enriched his storytelling, allowing him to convey complex concepts in an accessible manner. The author'Äôs works often foster a spirit of adventure and moral fortitude, echoing the Victorian ideals of perseverance and character development. I highly recommend "All Taut; or, Rigging the Boat" to readers of all ages, especially those captivated by nautical themes and the intricacies of boat rigging. This book not only offers an adventure-filled narrative but also serves as an excellent introduction to the joys and challenges of maritime life.

Middle school students Emma and Peter are assigned Act I of Romeo and Juliet to read for homework. Peter wants to get a better copy than his tattered paperback. So he climbs up onto a chair in his mother’s study to retrieve her heavy Riverside Shakespeare. Just as he tugs on it, the chair moves and the book hits him on the head. When Peter regains consciousness, he can speak only in lines from Shakespeare. So instead of saying a simple "hello," he might say something like, "How dost thou?" or instead of a simple "goodbye" he might say, "Parting is such sweet sorrow."
Emma Malcolm narrates this appealing young adult fantasy. She describes herself and her neighbor Peter Marlowe as “happy nerds.” Yet when Peter suddenly becomes unable to speak modern English, everything changes. As hard as Peter tries to speak for himself, his words come out as Shakespeare’s own. His strange speech irritates Emma at the school bus stop and embarrasses her in the baseball stadium. Emma thinks so, too, but she soon realizes that he cannot help himself. However, when he discovers that he can text and instant message in modern English, Emma becomes his translator.
English is Peter’s favorite class, and Ms. Hastings is his favorite teacher. Ms. Hastings decides to guide the class even further into Shakespeare’s world. She determines to help them put on the 30-Minute version of Romeo and Juliet. Peter and Emma will be the leads, the play’s star-crossed lovers—after all, Romeo and Juliet were about their age. Emma has never kissed a boy, and she realizes that she is about to experience her first kiss in front of the whole school.
This engaging comedy introduces Shakespeare’s language gracefully, making it part of a light and charming fantasy about language and first love.

The seven swords need Swordbearers. And Eadric needs to listen to a voice he’s blocked out for years in order to find them.
Eadric, a bladesmith from the east, stands at a crossroads. Honor the late king’s cryptic command, and risk dying at the hands of the nobility, or stay silent in a world where good men do nothing and watch his kingdom burn at the hands of the invader. Against the backdrop of an encroaching enemy and internal betrayal, Eadric’s quest becomes a profound exploration of faith and forgiveness, as he searches for men to wield his blades before it’s too late.
