It's an opportunity for you to not only listen but also to get to know me on a deeper level as I navigate the profound themes within these verses. My intention is that you'll find resonance with these poems beyond mere recitation. 
  The title, "Lonely Together," carries multiple layers of meaning. It initially sprang from a text I sent, suggesting that we should "be lonely together." This phrase lingered in my thoughts, embodying the idea that no one should bear loneliness in solitude, yet also acknowledging that even within a circle of loved ones, individual loneliness can persist.

  Imagine The Matrix retold by the reanimated cyborg bodies of the Brothers Grimm.
  		 
  Fables and fairytales collide with virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and monstrous myths in a world where no one knows what to believe. In his eighth book of poems, Paul Vermeersch responds to the increasing difficulty of knowing what is real and what isn’t, what is our genuine experience and what is constructed for us by The Algorithm. In a “post-truth” society rife with simulations, misinformation, and computer-generated hallucinations, these poems explore the relationship between the synthetic and the authentic as they raise hope for the possibility of escape from MCHNCT (Machine City) to NMLCT (Animal City), where the promise of “real life” still exists.
  		 
  These poems — all precisely 16 lines long, identically formed as though mass-produced — are themselves artificial creations, products of the imagination, sometimes disorienting but always vivid. They hold up a mirror not only to nature, but also to its unnatural distortions and facsimiles. In NMLCT, Vermeersch gives us his answer to an existence in thrall to the artificial. But it also foretells a different future, one where the air and the grass and the trees, and all the life they engender, might always be genuine and sensed and safe.

  Life is frenetic.  Everything is running faster which usually means we are running later.  Everything should have been done 5 minutes ago or better still yesterday.  We are slowly falling behind, overwhelmed by busy lives in an ever-exacting world. 
   
  In these more modern times, time is everything.  There’s never enough of it. 
   
  So how do we slow down and become more comfortable with our lives, how do we find a balance?  Life shouldn’t just be one task after another.  Yes, a good life has to be worked for, found time for, but life should also be enjoyed and savoured. 
   
  One answer may lie in the past.  Classic poets down the decades and centuries have wisely observed that there are many things, both great and small, that bring a sense of stillness, an aura of calm, a chance to re-engage with our feelings and emotions purely by taking time for moments that matter.   
   
  With verse and poems from the likes of William Shakespeare, Alexander Pope, Mirabai, Tagore, Rumi and the calming balms of many others that soothe the soul and bring the inner peace we all need.

  Dr. Actions: What do you think it all means? Dr. Thinking: I think it means that our collaboration is destined for great heights and the basking glory of inter-planetary fame and fortune. Dr. Actions: But you said your dream was terrifying. Dr. Thinking: Well, I’ve always been afraid of success. Dr. Actions: Well, get over it, Blockbrain. Now that we’ve invented the echoless yell, nothing is going to getin our way. Lay it on me.
     
  Dr. Thoughtless Actions, a young geneticist, awakes one morning to find a cardboard box secured to his head. Unable to wrench it off, he attempts suicide, not only failing but also, unbeknownst to himself, cloning himself, creating Dr. Wishful Thinking. The two losers fall madly in love, fall in science and fail to make a baby.
     
  The cast consists of the two boxheads, who also play two disembodied narrators. The conversationbetween the four voices, an intricately woven semantic circus, traverses boxedness, love and the more ridiculous areas of metaphysical speculation. Through a series of rapid exchanges, verbal games and musical numbers, they discover that all their thoughts come from God, all their words come from the devil, and their desire for love is a habit acquired from the cinema. Sound familiar? Don’t be so hard on yourself.
