Sinopsis

Weird Language Facts explores the diverse world of linguistics, revealing the surprising and often strange aspects of human language and cultural expression. It argues that language is more than just a communication tool; it reflects cultural and cognitive diversity. The book uncovers unusual linguistic structures, such as languages lacking verbs, and sheds light on the cultural context of language. It also investigates languages on the brink of extinction, highlighting the importance of preserving linguistic diversity. The book examines these "weird" language facts through the lens of phonology, grammar, and semantics, presenting examples from languages around the globe. It underscores how cultural norms and historical events shape unique linguistic features, and is structured to guide readers through basic concepts and then explore specific categories of language phenomena. It emphasizes evidence-based analysis, drawing from linguistic theories, academic papers, and language databases. The book aims to be both informative and entertaining, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience.

    Bonjour et bienvenue 😊🇫🇷
My name is Kieran, and I’ve been teaching foreign languages for over eighteen years. I love languages, I love learning and I love teaching. I also love chocolate, but this isn’t really the place to discuss my chocoholism!
I created 3 Minute French as a way to make learning French easier than ever before and accessible to anybody, especially people who have tried and failed in the past. My course is perfect for the complete beginner as I break down the French language into tiny chunks that I show you how to build back together again in a logical, simple-to-understand way. You can go from knowing no French at all to putting together your own sentences in just a few minutes.
The words and phrases that you'll learn in this course will be useful to you in any French-speaking country. A lot of traditional language courses either start by teaching you an endless list of pronunciation rules, or you learn phrases that aren't too useful for the beginner, such as how to talk about your family or your job. In 3 Minute French, you'll learn the most useful words first. As well as vocabulary, there are some useful grammar points that will be explained to you in bitesized chunks. You'll then be given plenty of opportunities to put them into practice.
You'll also be given two Vocabulary Expansion Sheets, which are documents full of useful vocabulary in specific topics ('food & drink' and 'numbers'). These Vocabulary Expansion Sheets give a boost to your French and help to improve your comprehension.

Wording Around with Editing gives readers everything they need to get their first draft of any writing project ready to publish.
The first three chapters detail steps of the editing process and introduce the types of editing: Substantive, Stylistic and Copy. The next four chapters get into the nitty gritty of each of those, with an additional chapter on Proofreading. The final three chapters explain the importance of writing communities in helping writers bring their book to its very best form. Every chapter of Wording Around with Editing ends with a resource to help readers dive more deeply into that chapters' topic, as well as prompts that help authors take their first steps on each stage of the editing process.
"Kathy Mac is a 'writer's writer.' In this tight and mighty work, she cuts to the heart of what she's learned about process, craft, and loving yourself through the hard parts of writing."
    – AJ Ripley
During the COVID-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020, poet and creative writing professor Kathy Mac (St. Thomas University, Fredericton, Canada) taught a free online course, the notes for which became Wording Around with Prose, the first in the Wording Around series. Wording Around with Editing: Getting your First Draft Ready to Publish is the second one in the series.
