Sinopse

"Rare Plant Propagation" offers a vital resource for preserving endangered botanical species in an age of declining biodiversity. This comprehensive guide bridges the gap between scientific understanding and practical application, making complex propagation techniques accessible to both professional botanists and serious gardening enthusiasts.

The book uniquely combines cutting-edge research with time-tested methods, covering everything from basic seed germination to advanced tissue culture procedures. At its core, the text explores three fundamental aspects: plant genetics, specialized propagation techniques, and conservation protocols. Through detailed case studies from leading botanical institutions, readers learn precise methods for maintaining genetic integrity while successfully reproducing rare species.

The book's approach is particularly valuable in its attention to timing, environmental controls, and sterile practices – critical factors that often determine propagation success or failure. Progressing through four major sections, the book begins with scientific foundations before moving into specific propagation methods, troubleshooting strategies, and long-term preservation techniques.

What sets this resource apart is its practical integration of botanical science with hands-on horticulture, supported by real-world examples from successful conservation programs. While technical in nature, the content remains accessible to readers with basic botanical knowledge, making it an invaluable tool for anyone committed to preserving plant biodiversity for future generations.

The Acropolis, which literally means “a city on the heights,” is a citadel whose currently surviving structures were mostly built during the 5th century B.C. in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. It functioned as a sacred precinct that contained the city’s most important religious and municipal structures, many of which have remained relatively intact for over 2,000 years. The Propylaea (the gateway to the Acropolis), the Parthenon (the principal shrine to the goddess), the Erechtheion (a shrine that supposedly houses the burial grounds of mythical Athenian kings), and the Temple of Athena Nike all survive to this day, and for these reasons, the Acropolis is perhaps the definitive and most eloquent expression of classical architecture, if not of the classical form itself. The Acropolis, which literally means “a city on the heights,” is a citadel whose currently surviving structures were mostly built during the 5th century B.C. in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens.
The center of political and commercial interaction in the Ancient Greek polis was the agora. The word essentially means a gathering place or an open space, and in all Greek city states, the agora was central to all aspects of daily life and commerce. As the agora developed as a civic space, particularly from the 6th century B.C. onward in Athens, the architectural splendor of the buildings associated with it became an ever more obvious demonstration of the power and glory of Athenian democracy. In its earliest forms, an agora in maritime cities was invariably situated near the sea, while in inland urban centers, it was usually located at the foot of the hill that normally provided the city’s ultimate defense. The agora was always the oldest part of any city and, as such, and as well as being the commercial hub of the area, also became the center of the religious and political life of the polis.

Humans and canines have been cohabitating for centuries, straddling a boundary that allows us to live together within and across our species. In this empathetic volume, author Dave Dempsey explores this life on the border, the overlapping planes between humans and the nonhuman world that lead to both magnificent creation and appalling destruction. Dempsey’s forty-year career as an environmentalist gives this book a nuanced context that could only be afforded by someone who has lived a half-wild existence himself, both defending and expanding the range of protections afforded to other species. As the former environmental advisor to Michigan Governor James J. Blanchard, Dempsey’s recollections also provide a unique perspective on the history of environmental policy, ruminating on how such policy reflects the way we understand ourselves in relation to the environment. Through vignettes that recall personal stories and those that outline historical events that influenced policymaking, Dempsey calls attention to the philosophical question of how we as humans relate to animals and our environment.
