Synopsis

"Fumio Kishida's Japan" offers a comprehensive examination of how Japan's current Prime Minister steers his nation through complex domestic and international challenges in an increasingly uncertain world.

The book masterfully weaves together three crucial aspects of Kishida's governance: his "New Capitalism" economic reforms, diplomatic responses to regional tensions, and efforts to modernize Japanese society while preserving traditional values. Through detailed analysis of policy documents and expert interviews, the work illuminates how Kishida's distinctive leadership style combines pragmatic economic policies with strategic diplomatic engagement.

The narrative begins with Kishida's rise to power in 2021, providing essential context about Japan's political landscape and the Liberal Democratic Party's influence. It explores how his administration tackles pressing challenges such as demographic decline, economic stagnation, and regional security concerns, particularly in relation to China and the Indo-Pacific region.

The book's analysis is particularly valuable for its insight into how domestic policy choices directly influence international relations, especially in areas like defense spending and economic partnerships. Drawing from government archives and first-hand accounts from policymakers, the book presents a balanced view of controversial topics such as constitutional reform and nuclear energy policy.

It serves as an essential resource for policymakers, business leaders, and anyone interested in understanding Japan's evolving role in global politics. The author's approach maintains analytical rigor while remaining accessible, making complex policy discussions comprehensible for readers interested in Asian politics and international relations.

‘An incredible read. I laughed, I cried and my heart was truly touched by this beautifully written true story of hope and humanity at its best.’ Rosemary Conley CBE'An extraordinary story. Truly Inspirational' Tim Vine
An astonishing story of kindness, self-learning, pain, unbelievable hope and the sheer power of love to change a life.
Christmas 1975 and Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is riding high in the charts. In a residential street just outside Cardiff, a persistent knocking breaks the stillness of the evening …
When Rob Parsons, a young lawyer, opens his door he finds a man standing before him clutching a bag of belongings and a frozen chicken. Rob and his wife, Dianne, invite him into their home, cook his chicken and offer him shelter for the night. What happens next is an astonishing story of human kindness, self-learning, incredible pain, unbelievable hope and the sheer power of love to change a life.
A Knock at the Door is the true story of Ronnie Lockwood, a homeless man who entered the home of a young couple, became a dustman and lived as part of their family for over 45 years until his death. But this is not just Ronnie’s story – it is also that of Rob and his family. Outwardly the two men’s lives were worlds apart – as Ronnie emptied rubbish bins, Rob flew on Concorde – and yet, they discovered they had similar struggles. Then the day came, at the lowest moment of the couple’s lives, when they turned to the homeless man for help.
But there were also remarkable turnarounds. Ronnie spent much of his spare time volunteering, including at a homeless centre, and ended up having a £1.6 million well-being centre named after him. Rob left his law practice and he and Dianne began a charity that touches the lives of millions of people.
You will have never read a story like this before, but at its heart is a simple message: whether we are a lawyer or a dustman – tomorrow doesn’t always have to be like yesterday.
This inspirational autobiography is a testament to the power of kindness and the resilience of the human spirit. It's a motivational journey through poverty, homelessness, and the unexpected bonds of an unconventional family.
For fans of Harry Benson (Scram!), Richard Foster (The Real Bettie Page), Max Lucado (Jesus), and Bear Grylls (Never Give Up).

Alfred Thayer Mahan is arguably the most influential military strategist in American history, and one of the world’s most important naval theorists. His work has been nearly as influential as the famous German military theorist Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), and the lesser-known but nearly as influential Swiss military writer Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779-1869).
Alfred decided to go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, which he was admitted to via the influence of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. He graduated in 1859 and started a career lasting almost 40 years. He served aboard a wide variety of ships, from a powerful frigate under sail to a variety of steam sloops, corvettes, and gunboats, many of which were side wheelers and all of which had auxiliary sails.
He started as a Midshipman and worked his way up the naval ranks to Captain and Commander. He also had several independent commands. He was stationed off the Atlantic Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico during the Union blockade of the Confederacy. He was on a sidewheeler tasked with keeping an eye on the French in Mexico, where Napoleon II had installed a Hapsburg archduke as emperor. He spent more than two years on station in the Far East, spent a couple of years with the South Atlantic Squadron based in Montevideo in Uruguay, and then a year off the west coast of South America, in a ship observing events during the War of the Pacific.
After a lengthy naval career, Mahan had assignments at the Naval Academy and the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He was invited to lecture at the Naval War College, and it was there that he collected together his notes and wrote a book, The Influence of Naval Power upon History, which somehow became an international bestseller in 1890. His book resulted in an invitation to dine with the Queen in Britain. It was translated into German and the Kaiser ordered a copy be placed on every German warship and in every school.

In 1965, Singapore's GDP per capita was on a par with Jordan. Now it has outstripped Japan. After the Second World War and a sudden rupture with newly formed Malaysia, Singapore found itself independent–and facing a crisis. It took the bloody-minded determination and vision of Lee Kuan Yew, its founding premier, to take a small island of diverse ethnic groups with a fragile economy and hostile neighbors and meld it into Asia's first globalized city.Lion City examines the different faces of Singaporean life–from education and health to art, politics, and demographic challenges–and reveals how in just half a century, Lee forged a country with a buoyant economy and distinctive identity. It explores the darker side of how this was achieved too; through authoritarian control that led to it being dubbed "Disneyland with the death penalty."Jeevan Vasagar, former Singapore correspondent for the Financial Times, masterfully takes us through the intricate history, present, and future of this unique diamond-shaped island one degree north of the equator, where new and old have remained connected. Lion City is a personal, insightful, and definitive guide to the city, and how its extraordinary rise is shaping East Asia and the rest of the world.
