Synopsis

“Nora Decter has written a wrenching, knowing, and wry novel about coming of age into a rough world.” — Meg Wolitzer, author of The Female Persuasion

For fans of Miriam Toews, an absorbing, darkly funny story of family, addiction, and survival

The summer Bria Powers turns 16 is sinister. Waves of insects plague her hometown of Beauchamp, where fentanyl has recently infiltrated the drug stream. Forest fires muddy the normally wide-open skies, and everything smells like a barbecue all the time. It’s also the summer Bria goes from having saved a life to ruining her own.

Since her drug-dealing father disappeared and his girlfriend overdosed, Bria has lived with her aunt Tash and best friend/cousin Ains. By day, Bria and Ains babysit Ains’s younger siblings and sling fast food at Burger Shack. But at night, Bria has her own secret world, sneaking out to see Someboy, an older guy who captivates her sometimes. Other times, he angers-insults-upends her, and that has a certain charm too.

But trouble comes for Beauchamp and for Bria in the form of bears that wander into town, dick pics texted from a mystery number, and a creeping dependence on what Bria should hate most of all.

Steeped in tragicomedy and written in starkly observed prose, What’s Not Mine explores inheritance, addiction, and survival when the odds are against you.

Creative, shocking, and constantly intriguing, Black Swan Impact is a taut geopolitical novel that features a bold but grim vision of a post-World War III future. The thrilling storyline never meanders, instead moving forward with purpose and keeping the reader in eager pursuit of it. Readers will enjoy this captivating, insightful, and detailed crisis that could only be created by an insider with many years of expertise in the subject matter.

A former government employee of the Department of Homeland Security, Helen Hynson Vettori delivers a credible and horrifying tale born from her consternation regarding the United States government’s suboptimal response to SARS CoV-2. Appalled that previous years of planning and preparation for biological incidents, to include pandemics, were overlooked, she wrote this sci-fi political thriller. As a result, readers will find unnerving truths woven throughout this terrifying fiction. Further, with her background as a Senior Medical Intelligence Analyst and paramedic, she provides graphic descriptions with visceral details that compel readers to turn each page with chilling captivation.

    A Most Fantastic Tragedy

The year was 1997. For Brian “Legs” Hamilton and his friends, it was the summer that followed graduation from college, the summer before life as an adult actually began—back when they were still invincible. It became the summer when anything that might have remained innocent in their lives came to an abrupt end.

Legs and his friends embark upon one last road trip before they must face the real world. They set their sites on rafting amidst the canyons of the Rio Grande River along the Mexican border as their final chaotic drug-fueled exploit. A five-day adventure that was supposed to be the best time in these young men’s lives ends as a nightmare that will haunt them forever. We all love our friends. We think we know them, and we think we know ourselves. Sometimes, though, circumstances spiral out of control, and life forces us to confront who we are and whom we’ve surrounded ourselves with.

Hubris Falls is a fast-paced, darkly comic tale of a group of men on their final, drug-fueled bender before adulthood who are trying to find their way—but are finding only the harshness and tragedy of life instead.

In a world forever altered by the Great Flood—a catastrophic event triggered by nuclear fallout and fueled by rampant greed and corruption—society has rebuilt itself aboard ships like The Tempest, where the old world's hierarchies have been replaced by a strict matriarchal order.
Men serve as servants, bound by a code that demands their obedience and restricts their power. Women and children, on the other hand, hold the reins of leadership, guided by the belief that a new world order is necessary to prevent the mistakes of the past.
The Tempest is a powerful tale of rebellion, transformation, and the enduring quest for a fair and just society. It challenges readers to reconsider the nature of power and the possibilities for creating a world where all can thrive, regardless of their past.

A bestseller and award-winner in Veronica Raimo's native Italy, Lost on Me is an irreverent and hilariously inverted bildungsroman from one of the most celebrated young writers working today.

Born into a family with an omnipresent mother who is devoted to her own anxiety, a father ruled by hygienic and architectural obsessions, and a precocious genius brother at the center of their attention, our heroine Vero languishes in boredom in her childhood home. Peering through tiny windows while cramped in her family coven, Vero periodically attempts to strike out but is no match for her mother's relentless tracking methods and masterful guilt trips. Vero's every venture outside their Rome apartment ends in her being unceremoniously returned home. It's no wonder that she becomes a writer—and a liar—inventing stories in a bid for her own sanity.

Spikey and clever, Vero delights in her own devious schemes. As she guides us through her failed attempts at emancipation, her discovery of sex and fixations with unwitting men, and ultimately her contentious relationship with reality, she also brings alive Rome from the 1980s through the early 2000s. With restless intelligence and covert tenderness, Lost on Me takes on the uncertain enterprise of becoming a woman.

The expert touch of master storytelling—entirely different from anything you have ever tried!

From A. J. Payler, master of modern fiction behind The Killing Song, Bank Error in Your Favor, and Terror Next Door comes Stop All Interference—seven stories of struggle against overwhelming odds and unstoppable fear, people pushed beyond betrayal and forgiveness, of the world we live in and what people will let themselves do just to survive in it.
    Featuring:
"Sometimes, People Just Have Things They Have to Do": Everyone—everyone said that getting the Artery Boys back together was impossible… and once, high-powered music manager Alec Rodenbaugh might even have agreed. But nothing in this world is truly impossible for someone who wants it badly enough. And even if what seemed like the perfect cover might instead turn out to be the perfect crime… well, sometimes, people just have things they have to do.
"Default Admin Credentials": It seemed like the perfect crime… that should have been his first warning. Nothing could go wrong, or that was how it seemed… but in the end, he couldn't honestly blame anyone but himself for not seeing it coming
"The Rumble of Heat Lightning Above the Deep Midwestern Woods": A mysterious figure stalks the murky backwoods of the Midwest on an unrelenting mission for revenge, with nothing but a Bowie knife to protect him against the monsters that haunt the forest. And even if he's able to find what he needs… it's already too late.
Also featuring "Sonata of Fear", "Dictated, Never Read" (as seen in Twenty-two Twenty-eight), "An Ideal for Living" and "Telemarketing in Reverse", available here and nowhere else.
