Beschreibung

Some love stories are quiet. Others burn. This one does both—and refuses to be forgotten.

Isaac was born for freedom—bright, adventurous, and full of dreams. When he gains admission into Cranford University, a prestigious Christian institution in Ogun State, Nigeria, he believes he’s stepping into the best years of his life. But the reality of Cranford hits hard. The university is cloaked in strict rules, forced religiosity, and suffocating limitations. It feels less like higher learning and more like a glorified secondary school—or worse, a prison.

In the midst of Isaac’s rebellion and search for freedom, he meets Amaka—an introverted, intelligent beauty in his department. A devoted church girl, Amaka is everything Isaac isn’t—reserved, rule-abiding, and untouched by the temptations of the world. Isaac admires her from a distance, too afraid to speak, too proud to show vulnerability.

For years, their paths cross but never merge. Isaac loses countless chances to pursue her, his fear and recklessness standing in the way. But in their third year, fate finally intervenes—and love blooms.

Just as they begin to taste happiness, everything begins to shift. Amaka, once a symbol of purity and calm, starts to crave the world beyond Cranford’s gates. And Isaac, after suffering failures and disgrace, starts to seek purpose, calm, and meaning. As Amaka turns outward, hungry for thrills, Isaac turns inward, longing for healing. Their love is tested by time, betrayal, and change.

They break apart on graduation day.

In the years that follow, life takes them on two very different journeys. Isaac secretly pursues his childhood dream of becoming a doctor, battling his past failures and the weight of expectations. Five years later, he becomes one of the most respected doctors in Nigeria—known across the country as “The Healing Hands.”

Amaka, on the other hand, dives headfirst into the world she once longed for. Parties, dangerous relationships, and reckless choices blur her path. Abroad and adored on social media, she gains followers—but loses herself. Ten years after Cranford, she is alone, sick, and broken. Diagnosed with a devastating illness and unable to have children, Amaka is desperate.

When a friend tells her about a miracle-working doctor in Lagos, she boards a flight—unaware that she’s walking into a reunion that fate had carefully scripted. The doctor is Isaac.

Now, faced with their past, their scars, and the love that never truly died, they must confront everything they once ran from.

Beneath the Rules, Beyond the Heart is a sweeping, deeply emotional romance about faith, identity, love, and second chances. Set against the backdrop of a rigid university system and the chaotic beauty of Nigerian life, this novel is both a coming-of-age and coming-back-home tale. It’s about the fire that refines, the rules that shape us, and the hearts that find their way—no matter how far they wander.

A new collection from Sister Sharon Hunter, CJ celebrating the people and circumstances who help make us what we are.

"For several months in 2020, I awoke most days at 3:00 a.m. to a mind busily at work; my own, of course. I had a choice to make, ignore it or explore it. Vivid memories, pictures really, of people I once knew climbed from the depth of my subconscious where I'd cleverly assigned them. They captured my attention, and rightfully so, for I owed them. When we reject our heritage, as I did, because it's not image worthy, we cancel as well those who enhanced our lives. Good people, brave people, wise people, sometimes shady and crooked people, all contribute to our circle of life. To fully understand me, I must include them. Chance Encounters is my thank you to those I carelessly tossed away in quest of shallow acceptability. They're alive once again on the pages of this book. And I'm forever grateful for their vibrant beauty, courage, ingenuity, and fascinating eccentricities. They paid the world the high compliment of being themselves." —Sister Sharon Hunter, CJ

Read by the author, Harry Josephine Giles.Them! by Harry Josephine Giles is a challenging and subversive collection of poems about trans life as it is lived today, through the lenses of work, technology and ecology.Witty, candid, furious, and always compelling, Them! negotiates the fraught and fruitful space between the worlds of ‘online’ and the ‘outside’, and how they fuse and diverge in the imagination.Giles’ visual poetics create an unusually dynamic reading experience as she finds new ways ‘to sing, shout and strike in the cracks of what’s possible’. At a time when trans rights are to the fore in public discourse, Them! is a zestful poetic intervention from one of this generation’s most necessary poets.
