Synopsis

First published in 1987, Nicole Brossard's classic novel returns to Coach House in a new edition. A seminal text in Canadian and feminist literature, Mauve Desert is a must-read for readers and writers alike.

This is both a single novel and three separate novels in one. In the first, Mauve Desert, fifteen-year-old Mélanie drives across the Arizona desert in a white Meteor chasing fear and desire, cutting loose from her mother and her mother's lover, Lorna, in their roadside Mauve Motel. In the second book, Maudes Laures reads Mauve Desert, becomes obsessed with it, and embarks on an extraordinary quest for its mysterious author, characters and meaning. The third book – Mauve, the horizon - is Laures's eventual translation of Mauve Desert. Like all good translations, it is both the same and revealingly different from the original.
Nicole Brossard's writing is agile and inventive; from moment to moment gripping, exhilarating and erotic. Her language drifts and swells like sand dunes in a desert, cresting and accumulating into a landscape that shifts like wind and words; she translates the practice of translation, the pulse of desire.

'With the appearance of Mauve Desert ... Nicole Brossard reinforces her claim to be ranked among the few truly radical text-makers in North America.'

– The Toronto Star

'In Mauve Desert, Nicole Brossard writes from the point of impact; from the collision between languages, between forms and ideas, between cultures and genders. Her effects too are the effects of collisions: brilliant sparks and white hot fragments, alarm and the possibility of danger, and a momentary light in which we glimpse the bizarrely distorted faces of strangers, which turn out after all to have been our own.' – Margaret Atwood

With her sick mother facing eviction from her care facility, Gillian can’t say no when her childhood nemesis, Tommy, shows up at her apartment with a $50k offer. All she has to do is return to the place where it all started, where she swore she’d never set foot again: Miscellany.

Miscellany is a place of wonder and enchantment—a Disney World for puzzle lovers, and one that quickly owns the lives of those who stay too long. Tommy is running the park’s latest big game, and he’s convinced someone is leaking the answers. With investment and expansion in the cards, Miscellany can’t afford a scandal. As a former puzzler who kept her distance from Miscellany for twenty years, Gillian should find it easy to investigate while avoiding Miscellany’s charms and entanglements.

But when Gillian arrives, she discovers things aren’t so straightforward. Her turncoat ex-friend Martin Ellsberg holds the security reins, Tommy’s estranged wife Evelina spins PR webs around the park’s machinations, and the manipulative park founder Sebastian offers her the financial security and intellectual future she always wanted. Time is not a river. It is a vast cosmic sea. Where each life exists as rippling circles on its surface, past and future being eternally present. And occasionally, one expanding ring intertwines with that of another, weaving the lives of two people together . . .

In 2012, Emme Wilde can't find the right guy. She wants to feel that swept-off-your-feet dizziness of true love. But so far, her dating life has come up short. Star Trek geek? Nice but too serious. Hippy artist? Cute but too vulnerable. Instead, Emme obsesses over the portrait of an unknown man in an old locket. Granted, a seriously dreamy guy with delicious, wind-swept hair she just itches to run her fingers through. But still. Dead men may be great listeners, but they are not exactly boyfriend material. Emme travels to England, determined to uncover his history and conquer the strong connection she feels.

In 1812, James Knight has given up finding the right woman. All he wants is someone to share his love of adventure. Instead, his life has become a Shakespearean drama. His brother languishes in a tragic star-crossed romance. His beloved sister clings to life, slowly dying of consumption. But then he finds a beautiful mystery woman, dripping wet and half-dead, beneath a tree on his estate. Now if he can uncover her history, perhaps adventure—and romance—will find him at last.

"I hear you could break out of jail if you wanted to," said the guard."Yes it's easy but where's the fun in that," said Lance smiling impishly."What fun can you have in jail?" asked the Kingpin."Not been here long enough for it to be a bore yet," Lance said who was having fun messing with their minds.
"I will not do it!" Lance Alexander to his uncle Sergeant Simon Alexander-Drax.
"It's alright! You won't be there long!" said his uncle.
"Then you go there!" said Lance shortly.
Lance's dad the coroner walked into the room.
"I can't!" said Lance digging his boots into the floor.
"You can't what?" asked Blake Alexander, Lance's dad.
"I can't go to prison as the Necromancer," said Lance.
"Why can't you," asked his uncle.
"Do you think he's the Necromancer?" asked Blake.
"Of course not we need a man we can trust on the inside who can pose as the Necromancer to entrap a prison kingpin," said Simon.
"You planning to come out as dead are you?" asked Lance not threatening just stating a fact the father of the Necromancer was Mortimer the grim reaper, King.
"I am not going to be around for that," said Blake planning a holiday in hell when Lance came out as the Necromancer a serial killer.
"Where are you going?" asked Blake's Uncle.
    "Never you mind," said Blake.
    "He's a coward," said Lance.
"No would you be in my place I can't be deposed as emperor of the solar system if I'm not there," Blake said.
"Didn't think of that," said Simon.
"I'll do it," said Lance defiantly thinking how much of a problem it would be to his father.
