Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on the 30th November 1835 and is far better known by his pen name of Mark Twain. An American writer and humorist of the first order he is perhaps best known for his novels ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and its sequel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ which are often described with that mythic line The Great American Novel.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which would later provide the backdrop to these great novels. Apprenticed to a printer he also became a typesetter and then a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi. Later, heading west with his brother Orion to make his fortune, he failed at gold mining and instead turned to journalism and thence his true calling as a writer of humorous stories where his wit and humor sparkled from every paragraph, his craft evident with every page and punctured target.
A staunch supporter of copyright protections this helped him keep much of the wealth his writing created, though much money was also lost on investments that he pursued in his love for science and technology as well as investing in his own inventions.
Twain was born during a visit by Halley’s comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it as well. He died the day after its subsequent return on 21st April 1910, at his house, Stormfield, located in Redding, Connecticut.

In her search to find healing and meaning in midlife, Glenda Goodrich undertakes a series of wilderness quests into the backcountry of Oregon, Washington, and California to discover what the natural world has to teach her about life, death, happiness, spirituality, and forgiveness.
This book chronicles the sacred ceremonies that connected Goodrich to the land, wove her into nature’s web, and transformed her from a woman who worked to please others into a woman who forged her own path. It is a brilliant collection of adventures—the touch of coyote fur, a snake’s kiss, a ceremonial blood offering—and a profound reflection on the healing and restorative power of nature.
"Glenda Goodrich’s mesmerizing memoir of her over twenty years of solo wilderness quests is an exhilarating and tender read. In moving and penetrating prose, she faces her fears, grief, regrets, even transgressions with the trees, rocks and creatures as her companions. Supported by the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel traditions and able guides, she stunningly recreates her sacred ceremonies as she more fully embraces her artist, wise woman self."

In Paris, he found work with Maréchal, the most prestigious box-maker and packer in Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Caroline Bongrand’s vivid account relates the rise of this daring young man, a virtuoso, visionary craftsman in a capital city transformed by Haussmann. When Eugénie de Montijo became Empress of France, she continued to enlist the services of her favorite packer, with whom she developed a sincere, lasting friendship. Frederick Douglass, born into slavery in Maryland in 1818, became one of the most prominent abolitionists, orators, and writers in American history. His life story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the pursuit of freedom. Douglass escaped slavery in his early twenties and dedicated his life to the abolitionist cause. Through his powerful speeches, autobiographical writings, and activism, he fought for the rights of African Americans and became a leading voice in the fight against slavery.

Douglass's legacy is rooted in his tireless efforts to expose the atrocities of slavery and advocate for equal rights. His first autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," published in 1845, vividly depicted the brutalities of slavery and its dehumanizing effects. The book became a bestseller and an influential tool in the abolitionist movement. Douglass went on to write two additional autobiographies, "My Bondage and My Freedom" (1855) and "Life and Times of Frederick Douglass" (1881), chronicling his life, experiences, and evolving viewpoints. His writings not only shed light on the horrors of slavery but also provided a platform for him to advocate for education, suffrage, and social justice.

In addition to his writings, Douglass's oratory skills captivated audiences and galvanized support for the abolitionist cause. He was a powerful and persuasive speaker, delivering speeches that stirred emotions, challenged societal norms, and demanded equality for all. His most famous speech, "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" delivered in 1852, remains a poignant critique of the hypocrisy of celebrating freedom while denying it to enslaved individuals.
