Sinopse

In "Around the World in Seventy-Two Days," Nellie Bly chronicles her audacious journey to circumnavigate the globe in a mere 72 days, challenging the then-prevailing stereotype of women in travel and journalism. Bly's narrative is imbued with a conversational style, vibrant observations, and a keen, often humorous eye for detail. As an early example of immersive journalism, her work not only captures the spirit of adventure but also serves as a critique of social norms in the late 19th century—a time when women were largely dismissed in the public sphere. Her account is enriched by lively anecdotes and captivating encounters, illustrating the cultural and political landscapes she traversed. Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochran in 1864, was a pioneering journalist known for her fearless investigative reporting and innovative storytelling. Her background in journalism, combined with her profound curiosity and determination, led her to embark on this remarkable journey inspired by Jules Verne's fictional work. Bly's experiences as a female reporter in a male-dominated field fueled her desire to push boundaries and challenge societal expectations, thereby laying the groundwork for future generations of women in media. "Around the World in Seventy-Two Days" is a must-read for anyone interested in feminist literature, travel writing, or the evolution of journalism. Bly's daring exploits resonate with the modern reader, offering insights not only into her time but also into the enduring spirit of adventure and resilience. This compelling narrative will inspire readers to explore the world with curiosity and boldness.

My Secret Life is the longest autobiography ever written. Penned anonymously during the 1800s by a wealthy and sex obsessed English gentleman who refers to himself simply as 'Walter', it offers an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian era. Banned from publication for its extreme and explicit content for nearly a century, My Secret Life is now being released as a fully scored immersive audiobook, with narration and music by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.

A candid memoir recounting the author's erotic experiences from childhood onwards, My Secret Life not only offers us a fascinating insight into the mind of someone whose entire life revolved around an epicentre of inescapable obsession, but a unique historic window through which we can approach and examine our own sexual psychology and behaviour.

Tolkien For Beginners will introduce the reader to the multilayered depth and breadth of Tolkien’s tales of Middle-earth, what critics, following Tolkien’s lead, refer to collectively as his legendarium. J.R.R. Tolkien sweeps us away to a distant time and place that is at the same time, our own time and place. He takes us to a world where difficult choices must be made and are made, where character is defined by those choices, and where redemption is possible though not always embraced. The Lord of the Rings taps a deep root in the human psyche. There is much death, destruction, and defeat in Tolkien’s world, but there is even more friendship, courage, and hope. What one remembers when one finishes reading The Lord of the Rings is not the vice of the villains, as strong and as well drawn as it is, but the virtue that empowers the heroes to resist it, even at the cost of their own lives. It will be the goal of Tolkien For Beginners to introduce the reader to the multilayered depth and breadth of Tolkien’s tales of Middle-earth. To do justice to the full dimensions of that legendarium, author Louis Markos will speak in two voices: that of the storyteller who loves the stories he tells and that of the critic who seeks to identify and explicate key themes from those stories. In his telling and analysis, he will treat the legendarium both as a collection of secondary-world myths with their own integrity and as a reflection of Tolkien’s Catholic worldview.

The 28-year period from 1933-1961, bracketed on one end by Hitler’s rise to power in Germany and on the other by the very height of the Cold War, was marked by a remarkably stable succession of American presidents. In fact, only three men held office in this period, and that predictability led to a general stability among government agencies. Conversely, the CIA had five different directors in its first 15 years, from 1946-1961, and then nine different directors in the next 20, with four of those directors serving less than a year. But of all the CIA’s directors, none wielded the immense influence or power of Allen Dulles, who, together with his brother, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, became arguably the two most powerful people in the government after the president.
To this day, Dulles’ eight-year tenure in that office is the longest, and as one of the country’s leading experts in international law, intelligence, and spycraft, he became renowned for his unwavering anti-communist ideology and readiness to take decisive measures to counter what he perceived as a menace to American safety. As such, it would be Dulles who sanctioned many of the CIA’s most notorious operations, including the ousting of Iran's democratically elected government in 1953, spying and experimentation on American citizens, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs. That last episode cost him his job, though he continued to play a role in American political life after President John F. Kennedy forced him out of the CIA in 1961.
By then, however, Dulles had already had an outsized influence on the direction of the country, and to this day his legacy can be felt, even as his reputation continues to be a source of much debate.
