Beschreibung

1953. The backstreets of Brighton are buzzing with preparations for the celebrations of the Coronation of Elizabeth II and, at the Grand Theatre, illusionist Teddy Brookes is plotting something crowd-pleasing to crown the occasion—with some assistance from glamorous Soho showgirl Pamela Rose. What the audience can never see is that, hidden behind the smoke and mirrors of his act, there is a whole world of secrets and lies…
And a disappearance boy.
In his acclaimed fourth novel, Neil Bartlett once again performs his trademark trick of slipping into the hidden spaces of queer history and bringing them vividly to life. Originally published in 2013, this new edition includes an introduction by the author and an Afterword with world famous illusionist, Derren Brown.
"Seductive, dark, theatrical and fascinating, Bartlett's writing is spellbinding"—Russell Tovey;
"As someone who works in theatre and live performance, I adored the way Bartlett drew out the characters and life of a backstage world, the glamour and sadness that can sometimes go hand in hand in entertainment. Bartlett writes in a way that draws you personally into the story, yet never lets you fully trust what the outcome may be"—Travis Alabanza
"The Disappearance Boy surrounds us in the crumbling spectacle of British variety entertainment—inviting us to an off-season Brighton where performers in lonely digs navigate their marginalised bodies and identities. They long to defy the boundaries of a restrictive and soon to be outdated world. A hypnotic and haunting journey that conjures the ghosts of variety into unexpected and emotive misdirections—the magic cannot be confined to the stage, but breaks through every page"—Marisa Carnesky
"Vivid characters, a fascinating subject and an expertly evoked setting. Excellent."– Daily Mail
"Bartlett delights in taking that which was once hidden and making it clear for all to see." – Independent
"This book and its enchanting characters had me under their spell. I was bewitched." – Sheila Hancock
"Mysterious, tender and utterly compelling." – S.J. Watson
"One of England's finest writers" – Edmund White

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM, was born in Kirriemuir, Angus on 9th May, 1860.
Barrie knew from an early age that he wished to be an author. His family wished otherwise. The compromise was that he would attend university to study literature at the University of Edinburgh. He graduated with an M.A. in April, 1882.
His first job was as a staff journalist for the Nottingham Journal. The London editor of the St. James's Gazette "liked that Scotch thing" in Barrie’s work and he wrote several stories for them and later several novels based on his mother’s early life.
Barrie though was increasingly drawn to working in the theatre. His first plays achieved little attention but in 1901 and 1902, Barrie had back-to-back theatre successes with Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton.
The character of ‘Peter Pan’ first appeared in The Little White Bird in 1902. This most famous and enduring of his works; Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up had its first stage performance on December 27th, 1904.
Peter Pan would overshadow all his other works. But his short stories cannot be overlooked. Indeed, from today’s vantage point they are excellent gems of social manners, of class and the way characters, sometimes in the most mundane of circumstances, react in the most surprising of ways.

    It's time.
    Time to get a life.
    Time to start over.
Time to move beyond the past.
The guys in the Single Dads Club would tell you it was time years ago, but until recently, the risk of hurting my little girl outweighed the benefit of getting a piece of ass.
Now that I have a tween daughter on my hands? It's becoming more apparent with every poster hung on the wall, every fight over make-up and every uncomfortable conversation about puberty, that at least one of us needs a female touch in our lives.
Jesus. I can't even think the words 'female touch' without thinking of her.
    Charlotte Rose. Charlie.
She's everything I shouldn't want, but someone needs to tell that to my damn libido because every time she's around I have a constant case of blue balls.
There's a list of reasons why I shouldn't give into what I feel—she's my best friend's little sister, she's seen me at my most vulnerable, and the biggest one—she's the first person in eleven years who has the potential to break me.
