Summary

Toxic Flame Retardants explores the hidden dangers of chemicals used to prevent fires in our homes and electronics. These flame retardants, designed for fire safety, are now recognized as a source of environmental contamination and potential health risks. The book investigates how these chemicals, including PBDEs, originally intended to save lives, have led to unintended consequences, such as endocrine disruption and neurodevelopmental problems. It emphasizes the urgent need to reassess current fire safety regulations and consider safer alternatives.

The book begins by tracing the history of flame retardant use and the regulations that pushed for their widespread adoption. It then systematically analyzes the chemical properties of different flame retardant classes and their applications, connecting these chemicals to studies revealing adverse health outcomes. The book culminates in a discussion of the environmental impact, showing their presence in unexpected places like Arctic ecosystems.

Through this approach, the book presents a comprehensive analysis of the science and policy surrounding toxic flame retardants, advocating for practical strategies to reduce exposure and promote safer chemical guidelines.

HowExpert Guide to Phlebotomy is a glimpse into the life of being a phlebotomist in a private clinic, hospital, or plasma plant. It includes an in-depth description of the types of patients we see, the equipment we use, and how to perform blood draws. The most important part of our profession is drawing blood by inflicting the least amount of pain possible for the patient. This means that you need to be educated on the procedures for specific tests such as a Heparin Quant Assay, a PTINR, and Lipid Panels. If you don’t know these tests, odds are they will need to be redrawn, and the patient will have to undergo an unnecessary procedure. This is a safety problem since every time we puncture the skin of a patient, we risk introducing infection into their bloodstream. This book will also teach you about the order of draw, descriptions of veins, descriptions of patients, and a multitude of different scenarios. If you are beginning a career or are interested in beginning a career in phlebotomy, this book will give you a good foundation of knowledge to build upon with tangible experience.
    About the Author

After working at Biomat for 12 months, she transferred to Bryan Hospital to work in the laboratory department. She has fallen in love with performing phlebotomy in the hospital setting and now works at Nebraska Medicine, where she draws upwards of 60 people daily. Along with being a phlebotomist, she will be graduating from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in May of 2023 with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Tracking Giants - Big Trees Tiny...

    Amanda Lewis, Dr. Diana...

Amanda Lewis was an overachieving, burned-out book editor most familiar with trees as dead blocks of paper. A dedicated "indoorswoman," she could barely tell a birch from a beech. But that didn't stop her from pledging to visit all of the biggest trees in British Columbia, a Canadian province known for its rugged terrain and gigantic trees.

The "Champion" trees on Lewis's ambitious list ranged from mighty Western red cedars to towering arbutus. The only problem? Well, there were many . . .

Climate change and a pandemic aside, Lewis's lack of wilderness experience, the upsetting reality of old-growth logging, the ever-changing nature of trees, and the pressures of her one-year time frame complicated her quest. Burned out again—and realizing that her "checklist" approach to life might be the problem—she reframed her search for trees to something humbler and more meaningful: getting to know forests in an interconnected way.

Weaving in insights from writers and artists, Lewis uncovers what we're really after when we pursue the big things—revealing that sometimes it's the smaller joys, the mindsets we have, and the companions we're with that make us feel more connected to the natural world.
