Synopsis

In "The Complete Novels," Nathaniel Hawthorne presents a masterful collection of his eight unabridged novels and romances, showcasing his exploration of moral complexity, sin, and human psychology. Hawthorne's unique literary style'Äîa blend of romanticism and realism'Äîinvites readers into a richly symbolic world where the Puritan heritage informs characters' inner conflicts. From the introspective depths of "The Scarlet Letter" to the eerie, allegorical landscape of "The House of the Seven Gables," each novel demonstrates Hawthorne's profound engagement with themes of guilt, redemption, and the darker facets of human nature, while employing lush prose and intricate narratives that reflect the American Romantic period's preoccupation with individual conscience. Hawthorne, born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, was deeply influenced by his Puritan ancestry, which sparked his lifelong fascination with the interplay between sin and virtue. His experiences'Äîranging from his post-college years in a transcendentalist community to his time as a writer in the custom-house'Äîshaped his philosophical outlook and provided rich material for his narratives. The intertwining of historical and personal darkness in his works stems from Hawthorne's keen observations of the human condition and a desire to understand the complex moral dilemmas society perpetuates. This collection is highly recommended for readers seeking a deeper understanding of early American literature and its profound questions. Engaging with Hawthorne's complete oeuvre allows audiences to appreciate his literary innovation and the psychological depth of his characters. His exploration of universal themes remains relevant today, inviting new generations to ponder the intricacies of morality, identity, and the human spirit.

"Hypnos" is a first-person narrative, written from the perspective of an unnamed character living in Kent and later London, England. The narrator writes that he fears sleep, and is resolved to write his story down lest it drive him further mad, regardless of what people think after reading it. The narrator, a sculptor, recounts meeting a mysterious man in a railway station. The moment the man opened his "immense, sunken, and widely luminous eyes", the narrator knew that the stranger would become his friend--"the only friend of one who had never possessed a friend before." In the eyes of the stranger, he witnessed important knowledge of the mysteries he always sought to learn. From this point on, he would touch his friend and sculpt him daily. At night they would commence their adventures, exploring worlds beyond human comprehension. Over time, the narrator's companion begins to speak of using their ability to transcend into the unknown as a way to rule the universe (via a set of drugs). The narrator is frightened by the prospect and disavows such hubris to the reader. Soon the narrator is off on a foray with his friend, travelling through a void that he explains is beyond human sensation. Passing through several barriers, eventually the narrator comes to one he cannot cross, though his friend does. Opening his "physical eyes", the narrator wakes up and awaits the return of his friend, who awakes severely shaken and reticent, warning only that they must avoid sleep at all cost. From then on, with the aid of drugs, the two avoid sleep, as each time they succumb, they both seem to rapidly age and are plagued by nightmares that the narrator refuses to explain. The story ends with the narrator explaining that one night, his friend fell into a "deep-breathing sleep" and was impossible to arouse. The narrator shrieks, faints, and awakes surrounded by police and neighbors, who inform him that his friend was not real. There is only a bust of his friend in his room, engraved with the Greek word: _____ (Hypnos).

"Adeline Mowbray, or, The Mother and Daughter, is a novel by Amelia Opie that was published in 1804. The experiences of the heroine, Adeline, are loosely based on the unconventional life of Mary Wollstonecraft, an acquaintance of Opie. In the novel, Opie explores what might happen when a woman's idealistic philosophical beliefs conflict with society's notions about female sexuality. The philosophically minded Adeline decides that marriage is an outmoded institution. She refuses marriage to Frederic Glenmurray (modeled on William Godwin) and instead chooses to live with him as his sexual equal. Although Adeline is honorable, clever, and honest, she faces social condemnation. She is disowned by her mother and respectable friends and harassed by men who assume she is sexually available. After Glenmurray dies, Adeline seeks protection by marrying the abusive Mr. Berrendale, who ultimately abandons her and their daughter, Editha. At the end of the novel, the ill Adeline is finally reunited with her mother. Adeline repents having transgressed society's expectations of women and, before she dies, leaves instructions on how Editha is to be educated."

The canoe was now approaching the land. The bay opened out, and a gap in the white surf of the reef marked where the little river ran out to the sea; the thicker and deeper green of the virgin forest showed its course down the distant hill slope. The forest here came close to the beach. Far beyond, dim and almost cloudlike in texture, rose the mountains, like suddenly frozen waves. The sea was still save for an almost imperceptible swell. The sky blazed.
