Beschreibung

Little Masterpieces is a distinguished collection of Nathaniel Hawthorne's shorter works, bringing together some of the most memorable and finely crafted examples of his storytelling genius. This volume offers readers a rich introduction to Hawthorne's literary artistry, showcasing his ability to blend imagination, symbolism, and moral reflection within concise yet powerful narratives.

The stories in Little Masterpieces span a range of moods and themes, from quiet domestic scenes to tales infused with allegory and gentle fantasy. Hawthorne's characteristic concern with conscience, human frailty, and the unseen consequences of moral choices runs throughout the collection. Each piece, though brief, is carefully constructed to leave a lasting impression, revealing deeper truths beneath simple events and familiar settings.

Written in Hawthorne's elegant and thoughtful prose, these works exemplify the author's belief that short fiction can be as profound and emotionally resonant as a full-length novel. His mastery of atmosphere, symbolism, and psychological insight transforms everyday experiences into meaningful reflections on life, character, and morality.

Little Masterpieces is ideal for readers seeking a curated selection of Hawthorne's shorter writings, whether as an introduction to his work or a companion to his more famous novels such as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. The collection is equally well suited for students, educators, and lovers of classic American literature.

Timeless in its themes and refined in its execution, Little Masterpieces stands as a testament to Nathaniel Hawthorne's enduring influence on the short story form and his ability to capture the complexities of the human spirit in even the smallest of literary gems.

After undergoing many weeks of training during the harsh winter months in the frozen north, Jesse McDermitt and Rusty Thurman are ready for some time off, their last leave period in their first year in the Marine Corps.
Only this time, it’s not palm trees and sunny tropical beaches they’ll be unwinding at, but diving in the frigid and treacherous coastal waters off the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the famed Graveyard of the Atlantic, thought to hold great wealth in the cold embrace of her murky depths.
The perilous banks, with their constantly shifting cuts, both far offshore, and in Pamlico Sound, have been the stronghold of piracy for centuries and thousands of ships lay in their watery graves there. Modern pirates don’t plunder merchant vessels for gold, sugar, and silks, but instead preyed on all sorts of boaters around the Sound, even drug traffickers.
When Jesse and Rusty, along with another Marine, run up against the ocean thieves, an unlikely partner joins in the fight to tip the odds.
The OBX has a history as deep and dark as the ocean that surrounds it. And all too often, man-made storms cause just as much havoc as the hurricanes which have lashed her shores.

Walter Lionel George was born to British parents on the 20th March 1882 in Paris, France.
It was not until he was a young man of 20 that he learned English. In 1905 he moved to London to work in an office but soon found himself working as a journalist, and as a foreign correspondent, for various London newspapers.
By 1911, with the publication of his first novel ‘A Bed of Roses’, which portrayed the fall of a penniless young woman into prostitution, his efforts were rewarded, and he turned to literature as a full-time career.
His writings now sold well. He added short stories to his offerings as well as literary essays and several tracts that discussed left-wing themes. Some critics thought his subject matter to be difficult and poorly chosen. His political views gained him little credit amongst his peers although such luminaries as George Orwell praised both subject matter and style.
His personal life was also turbulent. His three marriages left him widowed twice. In 1908 he married Helen Porter who died in 1914. Helen Agnes Moorhead followed in 1916 but died only 4 years later. His last marriage was to Kathleen Geipel in 1921.
    W. L George died on 30th January 1926. He was 43.
