Beschreibung

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Nathaniel Hawthorne and Dark Romanticism

First published anonymously in 1828, "Fanshawe" is the first novel written by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The novel was written during or immediately after Hawthorne's college days and published at his own expense.
“Fanshawe” is a hard book to categorize, in that it's a novel in search of a genre. There's a bit of adventure, a dash of romance, a pinch of drama, a few comedic flourishes, but no single element shines through very strongly. Obviously, the key ingredient is Hawthorne's writing, which was already masterful even at this initial stage of his career.

Plot summary
Dr. Melmoth, the President of fictional Harley College, takes into his care Ellen Langton, the daughter of his friend, Mr. Langton, who is at sea. Ellen is a young, beautiful girl and attracts the attentions of the college boys, especially Edward Walcott, a strapping though immature student, and Fanshawe, a reclusive, meek intellectual. While out walking, the three young people meet a nameless character called “the angler,” a name he gets for appearing an expert fisherman. The angler asks for a word with Ellen, tells her something in secret, and apparently flusters her. Walcott and Fanshawe become suspicious of his intentions...

A grieving mother and son hope to survive Christmas in a remote mountain cabin in Pennsylvania, in this chilling novella of dread, isolation, and sinister spirits lurking in the frozen woods. Perfect for fans of The Only Good Indians, The Shining, and The Babadook.

Two weeks ago, Christine Sinclaire's husband slipped off the roof while hanging Christmas lights and fell to his death on the front lawn.

Desperate to escape her guilt and her grief, Christine packs up her fifteen-year-old son and the family cat and flees to the cabin they'd reserved deep in the remote Pennsylvania Wilds to wait out the holidays.

It isn't long before Christine begins to hear strange noises coming from the forest. When she spots a horned figure watching from between frozen branches, Christine assumes it's just a forest animal—a moose, maybe, since the property manager warned her about them, said they'd stomp a body so deep into the snow nobody'd find it 'til spring.

But moose don't walk upright like the shadowy figure does.

They don't call Christine's name with her dead husband's voice.

    Author: H. P. Lovecraft
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1936
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 84 — Part 7 of 12
    Description:
In Part Seven of At the Mountains of Madness, Dyer and Danforth’s study of the alien murals deepens into something far more disturbing. The stone carvings no longer merely recount triumph and expansion, but trace decline—depicting internal strife, biological experimentation, and the catastrophic consequences of creations that turned against their makers.
The explorers begin to understand that the city’s abandonment was not sudden, but the result of prolonged struggle. Scenes etched into the walls suggest war, mutation, and an erosion of control, as once-dominant beings face threats born of their own ingenuity. What had seemed like a perfectly ordered civilization now appears fragile, haunted by unintended outcomes.
As the full narrative emerges, the ruins feel less like a relic of the distant past and more like a cautionary chronicle. Knowledge itself becomes unsettling, and the realization grows that intelligence—no matter how ancient or advanced—cannot escape the consequences of its own ambition.
This is Part 7 of a 12-part complete audiobook series, where history recorded in stone reveals not progress, but the recurring pattern of creation, hubris, and collapse.

Title: The Middle Toe of the Right Foot
    Author: Ambrose Bierce
Narrator: Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1890
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Number 53 in the Timeless Terrors series
    Description:
In The Middle Toe of the Right Foot, Ambrose Bierce delivers a chilling tale of guilt, vengeance, and the lingering echoes of past violence. The story follows Manton, pressured into spending the night in the abandoned Odell house—the site of a brutal murder for which he was once accused. What begins as a cruel dare soon becomes a confrontation with forces more relentless than the men who seek to humiliate him.
Alone in the decaying structure, Manton becomes aware of a silent presence watching from the darkness. When his tormentors return at dawn, they find him dead from terror, and eerie footprints in the dust reveal that he was not alone. The chilling pattern exposes the truth behind the crime, the victims, and the supernatural justice that finally found him.
With his trademark blend of irony and psychological dread, Bierce transforms a tale of cruelty and guilt into a haunting exploration of retribution.
Narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the story’s mounting tension and stark, ghostly imagery, bringing Bierce’s distinct American Gothic style to life. While the text is in the public domain, this narration is an original performance and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
As the fifty-third entry in Timeless Terrors, The Middle Toe of the Right Foot remains one of Bierce’s most striking examinations of fear, justice, and the shadows a crime can cast long after death.

    Description:
In Part Ten of At the Mountains of Madness, the mounting dread gives way to undeniable horror as Dyer and Danforth’s worst suspicions begin to take shape. The clues scattered throughout the ancient city—once ambiguous and easily rationalized—now converge into a terrifying coherence that can no longer be ignored.
What seemed like faint suggestions of recent activity hardens into something far more concrete. The explorers find evidence that the city’s long-slumbering past may not be entirely dormant, and that the forces described in the murals may still exert a presence within the frozen labyrinth.
The oppressive Antarctic silence is shattered by the growing realization that they are not alone. Every echo, every unexplained trace, presses upon their nerves, transforming scientific inquiry into a desperate struggle to comprehend—and survive—the unknown.
In this tenth installment of the 12-part complete audiobook series, Lovecraft drives the narrative toward its harrowing climax, as the line between discovery and danger collapses, and the explorers stand on the brink of encountering something that should have remained forever buried beneath the ice.
