Synopsis

The poems in Natalie Ann Holborow's third collection, Little Universe, are an exploration of tumultuous human emotions and nature's ever-present rhythms.

Lives bustle within a busy hospital's walls, humming against the Gower landscape that stretches beyond its windows. The tiny worlds of a wide cast unfold as they deal with their own emergencies, losses, recoveries, hopes and histories.

Medical students stride along the corridors in rubber shoes, scars running the lengths of their lives. A janitor is crying in the Gents, watching the flowers at the hospital entrance shrug themselves back into earth. The biblical Lilith offers knowledge from one woman to the other. And somewhere in the distance, a bunker dissolves into gold upon Pennard's shoulder, dusk folding to sleep on Rhossili.

The characters in this book are all bound by the undying pulse of existence – yet their stories serve as a reminder that despite these stark contrasts, life persists.

Salvador Dalí sublimated his madness without ever falling into it. Antonin Artaud, confronted with the traumas of childhood, oscillated all his life between an overflowing creation and accesses of madness. Niki de Saint Phalle, thanks to artistic expression, cured herself of a deep depression linked to the trauma of incest. Vincent van Gogh, in order to reach the summit of his art, put himself in danger to the point of committing suicide. Camille Claudel exhausted herself in her creation and ended up being interned and never creating again.
Based on the life and work of a dozen artists of genius, Thierry Delcourt tries to understand these artists’ transition from the summits of creation and the artistic abyss. Why do some people fall into madness while others go through life without a hitch? Why do some sick people find healing through creation? Why do many artists have an obsessive need to create relentlessly?
To these fascinating questions, this book offers striking answers about creation on the brink of the abyss.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald once said: »Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy.« In the 1990s, nobody fell deeper than O.J. Simpson. Once considered a national treasure, the athlete was accused of brutally slaying his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman on June 12, 1994. Within days, the media and public developed an unprecedented obsession with the story, turning a murder investigation and trial into a sensationalized reality show. Tatjana Neubauer examines the mediatization, deliberate manipulation, and the simplification of popular criminal trials for profit on television. She demonstrates that TV conflated legal proceedings into entertainment programming by commodifying events, people, and places.
