The first major book on the uprisings in Iran in 2022 and 2023

On Tuesday 13 September 2022, all Mahsa Amini has planned is a day shopping in Tehran. Her birthday is next week. But she is arrested as she comes out of the subway – the Guidance Patrol deem her hijab inadequate. On Friday she is pronounced dead. By Sunday, women have taken to the streets across Iran, setting their headscarves on fire and cursing the Supreme Leader. Months later, workers down their tools and businesses close. The battle-cry everywhere: Women, Life, Freedom.

This isn’t a passing protest wave; something has changed irrevocably. Arash Azizi guides us through Iran ablaze, history being made in real time. From an International Women’s Day celebrated inside Iran’s most notorious prison to mass strikes in Kurdistan, ordinary Iranians are taking risks to fight for a better future.

Even as the regime spills blood in retaliation, Iranians have not given up. Today one thing’s clear: no Supreme Leader can turn the clock back. A different Iran is within sight; Azizi shows us what it might look like.

How the US policy of competition with China is detrimental to democracy, peace, and prosperity—and how a saner approach is possible

For close to a decade, the US government has been preoccupied with the threat of China, fearing that the country will "eat our lunch," in the words of Joe Biden. The United States has crafted its foreign and domestic policy to help constrain China's military power and economic growth. Van Jackson and Michael Brenes argue that great-power competition with China is misguided and vastly underestimates the costs and risks that geopolitical rivalry poses to economic prosperity, the quality of democracy, and, ultimately, global stability.

This in-depth assessment of the trade-offs and pitfalls of protracted competition with China reveals how such a policy exacerbates inequality, leads to xenophobia, and increases the likelihood of violence around the world. In addition, it distracts from the priority of addressing such issues as climate change while at the same time undercutting democratic pluralism and sacrificing liberty in the name of prevailing against an enemy "other." Jackson and Brenes provide an informed and urgent critique of current US foreign policy and a road map toward a saner, more democratically accountable strategy of easing tension and achieving effective diplomacy.

Catherine II (born Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst; May the 2nd 1729-- November the 17th 1796, typically called Catherine the Great, ruled as Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, making her the nation's longest-serving female ruler. Following the assassination of her spouse and 2nd cousin, Peter III, she rose to power. Russia grew bigger, its civilization was rejuvenated, and it was acknowledged as one of Europe's great powers during her reign.Catherine used her honorable favorites, most significantly Count Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin, to help her gain power and manage the empire. She ruled at the time of a period when the Russian Empire was rapidly broadening through intrusion and diplomacy, with the help of very effective generals like Alexander Suvorov and Pyotr Rumyantsev, and also admirals like Samuel Greig and Fyodor Ushakov. In the south, the Crimean Khanate was beat in the Russo-Turkish War (1768-- 1774), and Russia colonized Novorossiya along the Black and Azov Seas, thanks to triumphs over the Bar confederation and the Ottoman Empire.Catherine the Great has been mentioned so many times in Russian history, it’s definitely a good chapter to study to understand the background of the country more.
