In a dystopian near-future America, incarcerated people can opt into the Criminal Action Penal Entertainment program—a televised gladiator-style deathmatch where survival means a chance at freedom. Chain-Gang All-Stars follows Loretta Thurwar and Hamara “Hurricane Staxxx” Stacker, two top contenders and lovers, as they battle through a system designed to exploit their pain for profit and spectacle. As Thurwar nears her potential release, the couple must navigate loyalty, resistance, and the violent machinery of a justice system turned bloodsport. Brutal, urgent, and unflinchingly human, the novel examines incarceration, systemic racism, and the commodification of Black bodies through a sharp, speculative lens.
