Synopsis

Snow Trails Glow examines the snowmobile's transformative impact on Inuit hunting practices and Arctic regions, revealing how a single machine altered a centuries-old way of life. This exploration of modernization highlights the complex interplay between technology, culture, and ecology, relevant to many indigenous cultures. The book reveals that, while snowmobiles increased hunting efficiency, they also led to social, economic, and environmental shifts. One such shift involves the increased hunting range impacting animal populations.

The book begins by outlining traditional Inuit hunting methods and their sustainability. It then transitions into the adoption of snowmobiles and their immediate benefits, before delving into subsequent shifts in hunting patterns, resource management, and social dynamics. Snow Trails Glow utilizes oral histories, ethnographic studies, and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive analysis of the cultural preservation, environmental impact, and economic dependency linked to snowmobile use.

Ultimately, it advocates for culturally sensitive approaches to technology adoption and resource management, offering valuable insights for sustainable development in the Arctic.

This book presents the remarkable personal journals of German soldier Hans Roth. Writing as events transpired, he recorded the mystery and tension as the Germans deployed on the Soviet frontier in June 1941. In these journals, battles are described in "you are there" detail, as Roth wrote privately, as if to keep himself sane, knowing that his honest accounts of the horrors in the East could never pass through Wehrmacht censors. When the Soviet counteroffensive of winter 1942 begins, his unit is stationed alongside the Italian 8th Army, and his observations of its collapse, as opposed to the reaction of the German troops sent to stiffen its front, are of special fascination.

Roth's three journals were discovered many years after his disappearance, tucked away in the home of his brother, with whom he was known to have had a deep bond. After his brother's death, his family discovered them and quickly sent them to Rosel, Roth's wife. In time, Rosel handed down the journals to Erika, Roth's only daughter, who had immigrated to America. Hans Roth was doubtlessly working on a fourth journal before he was reported missing in action in July 1944 during the battle known as the Destruction of Army Group Center. Although Roth's ultimate fate remains unknown, what he did leave behind is an incredible firsthand account of the horrific war the Germans waged in Russia.

A Broadway Stage Manager's pandemic memoir!
    March 12, 2020
Last night, after weeks of downplaying and ridiculing the virus, we were finally told by our President, that it is, in fact, serious…
And so, it began. Broadway shut down. Instead of sitting in a darkened theatre every night watching Jersey Boys, Richard Hester found himself sitting on his sofa glued to the news. Hold, Please chronicles what came next from the particular point of view of a career Broadway stage manager living in Manhattan. Part journal, part blog, these essays attempted to make sense of the crisis and what it was doing to us.
What follows is a journey through one of the most fascinating periods in both our cultural and our personal histories. Written with humor and compassion, Hold, Please provides a unique perspective on this time and delivers the most important lesson of all - Hope.
“I’ve watched Richard create order out of chaos for years, so it comes as no surprise when he was able to do it again with these beautiful posts. Together they create a powerful reminder of where we’ve been as well as a thoughtful and compassionate guide for moving ahead.” - Bernadette Peters
“I am so grateful that Richard wrote all of this down so that I don’t have to remember it myself.” - Patti LuPone
“(Hester) describes such experiences in a warm, conversational tone in a book in which his lyrical writing about the natural world adds dimension to humorous stories about working—and not working—from home....Hester interweaves descriptions of living through Covid-19 with stories of his colorful theatrical career…” - Kirkus Reviews

In February 1999, Pakistani Army personnel, disguised as jihadi militants, infiltrated into mountainous Kargil and occupied key vantage points. Their intrusion triggered a limited war between the world's newest nuclear states. It was a bitter battle, and one that threw up important lessons for India's defence preparedness, as also its responses to conflicts such as this. This incisive book by General V.P. Malik, former Chief of the Army Staff, analyses the reasoning behind the Pakistani Army's moves and tactics and reviews crucial issues such as the extent of intelligence and surveillance failure on the Indian side and the measures necessary to redress these failings. Away from questions of strategy and tactics, however, Kargil is also a reminder of the unalloyed heroism that was on display during those grim weeks, heroism that become a benchmark for valour.

The New Zealand Wars, a series of armed conflicts in the 19th century, marked a defining period in the history of Aotearoa. These wars were fought primarily between the British colonial forces and various Māori iwi (tribes), though the conflicts were far from one-sided. They stemmed from a complex array of issues, including disputes over land, sovereignty, and the growing influence of European settlers on Māori society. The origins of these wars can be traced to the arrival of Europeans, whose presence in New Zealand brought with it not only trade but also significant cultural, political, and economic changes.
The initial encounters between Māori and European settlers were characterized by a mixture of curiosity, trade, and alliance-building. However, as more settlers arrived, pressure mounted on Māori land and resources. Tensions began to escalate as land was purchased, often under dubious circumstances, leading to Māori grievances over the loss of their ancestral territories. The New Zealand Company, a British settlement scheme, played a significant role in these land disputes, exacerbating tensions between Māori and the Crown.
In response to these threats, Māori began to organize and resist. Some iwi, such as the Waikato and Taranaki, developed strong resistance movements in defense of their land and way of life. The British, in turn, sought to assert their authority over the increasingly restless Māori population, leading to the outbreak of hostilities.
