Synopsis

Plains Winds Dance challenges conventional understandings of Plains tribes by exploring their sophisticated agricultural practices and their importance to cultural identity. Far from being solely nomadic hunters, these indigenous communities skillfully cultivated crops, integrating farming into their spiritual beliefs and social structures. For example, specific crop cultivation techniques were often tied to seasonal rituals, demonstrating the deep connection between the environment and their way of life.

The book examines how historical forces, including intertribal relations and European contact, shaped these farming practices. Oral histories, archaeological evidence, and ethnobotanical studies are interwoven to present a nuanced historical narrative.

The book progresses by first establishing the geographical and cultural context of the Plains tribes, then detailing their agricultural methods and the cultural significance of farming, and finally analyzing the impact of historical interactions.

The book's unique value lies in highlighting the agency and adaptability of the Plains Indians, offering a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of their history.

Darwin longgrassers have been living large since the beginning. They come from all over the Territory to camp in the public spaces around town, to catch up with family and friends, attend health and legal matters, holiday and shop, and drink. Especially drink. And the whitefellas don’t like it. They think they’re noisy and dirty and rude. So, they try to move them on.
For 150 years they’ve been trying to move them on. But the longgrassers won’t go. Yet beneath this running battle between the settled and the free lurks an undeniable truth about colonisation that is almost Newtonian in style. This is a story of resilience and denial against outrageous odds, an underdog’s triumph of survival in the modern world, for a people who just refuse to give in

A Scotland on Sunday Sports Book of the Year
Take a hilarious romp through the best and worst of Scottish footballing history.
The Scot who won England the World Cup. Macaroon bars and Bovril. When Dixie Deans met Bob Marley. When Davie Robb met Olivia Newton-John. When George McCluskey met the Stones. When Rick Wakeman filed match reports for Meadowbank Thistle. Triumphs and disasters, submarines and rowing boats, War and Peace (who's read it). The Cowdenbeath kettle. The Brechin hedge. Morton's great Danes. Icarus at East Fife. The dead pigeon sketch and the amazing technicolor booze-coat. The can girls. Those who flogged ice cream and licked Hitler. The world's oldest conjoined twins. Inside the half-time scoreboards. Our greatest goal, our greatest assist, our keepers. Scarlett Johansson! And of course Arthur Montford - commentator, curator, favourite uncle to the nation.
In Bring Me the Sports Jacket of Arthur Montford, Aidan Smith mines Scottish football history for quirk, strangeness and charm. On a journey that takes him to Albania and also Albion Rovers, great players are celebrated and so are great characters. Rediscover old legends (not told this way before) and maybe learn about new ones. If there's a running theme it's that our game, its participants and those who watch in the rain are one and the same thing - indomitable.

The Great Northern War, fought from 1700-1721, gets its name from the fact the war focused on the Baltic, but the battlefields extended into Germany and deep into Poland and Ukraine. Sweden was a military power with a small empire in the Baltic, while Russia was still a landlocked place, backward when compared to the rest of Europe, not very powerful, and highly xenophobic. The Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth was still powerful, and the Cossacks were still free. Moreover, despite the fact the Ottoman Empire was weakened, it held sway in the Balkans and deep into Eastern Europe, and the Krim Tatars were still raiding into Ukraine, Russia, and Poland for slaves. The Great Northern War would involve the Ottomans and the Tatars as well.
Given the length of the conflict, perhaps it’s not surprising that other Western European kingdoms ended up in the mix. Brandenburg-Prussia was involved in the later phases of the war - Frederick William was an elector of Brandenburg and had just been granted the right (by the Holy Roman Emperor) to call himself king in Prussia. He held both titles, but there was still a formal separation between Brandenburg and Prussia. Frederick William was strongly interested in acquiring some or all of Pomerania, a region on the Baltic coast, particularly in acquiring a port, which would eliminate paying Swedish tolls in Swedish-controlled ports.
Ultimately, the most important aspect of the war is that it laid the foundations for the Russian Empire. By 1718, the Russians had conquered most of Finland, the port of Riga, and the Swedish city of Vyborg. These gains in the Baltic Sea strengthened the burgeoning Russian Empire and provided ports and access to the rich resources of Finland, including valuable meat and lumber. Peter also proved to be a rather benevolent conqueror, allowing these regions to maintain both their faith and culture.
