Synopsis

Nail Building Essential explores the surprisingly significant history of nail manufacturing, revealing how this seemingly simple object has profoundly shaped construction, architecture, and even economic development. From individually crafted pieces by blacksmiths to mass-produced products of the Industrial Revolution, the book traces the nail's technological journey. Readers will discover how the scarcity of nails influenced early building practices, necessitating innovative joinery techniques, and how mechanization enabled larger, more complex structures.

The book starts by examining the origins of nail making, from ancient civilizations to the medieval period, then transitions to the era of mechanization and the rise of factories. A significant portion focuses on the diversification of nail types and their specialized applications, such as framing and roofing. Nail Building Essential bridges the gap between technology history, architectural history, material science, and economic history, offering a comprehensive look at how nail production impacted building techniques, material longevity, and global trade.

This book adopts a narrative non-fiction approach, interweaving historical accounts with technical explanations, making it accessible to historians, architects, builders, and anyone interested in the history of construction. It culminates with an analysis of contemporary nail manufacturing techniques, including the use of advanced materials and coatings, while also touching on debates surrounding the environmental impact of industrial-scale production.

HowExpert Guide to Honey Bees & Beekeeping is a great starter guide for those who are simply interested in honey bees or those who are interested in becoming beekeepers themselves. It describes the science of the honey bee itself, as well as the inner workings of each member and how they work together to survive.
The colony, as a whole, can be treated as its own organism because of how the honey bees work together to perform tasks as a social species. Beekeepers have been observing such behaviors for generations, and I would like to pass on the knowledge to others. The beekeeping portion of this guide provides a wealth of knowledge on how to start your own apiary.
Learn about all the equipment necessary for your operation, how to inspect your hives, what a beekeeper does throughout the year, a short guide to pests and diseases, bee-friendly plants, and how to extract honey and wax from your hives. All of this information can be found in this book. Just a warning, this hobby can cause one to become very passionate about one very small and fuzzy insect. It is not uncommon for a beekeeper to want to be constantly learning about honey bees.
    About the Author
Emily Helton was introduced to the science of honey bees and the world of beekeeping when she was 17 years old. Dr. Jamie Ellis offered her a summer job at the University of Florida Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory. Through her six years working at the lab, she grew to love learning everything she could about honey bees and moved on to teaching others as well. Emily spoke at schools, clubs, and conferences and assisted in planning educational events in hopes of reaching more people. Now living in California, Emily voluntarily teaches at the Honeybee Discovery Center in Orland, where she is also on the Educational Committee and Advisory Council.

In Profit over Privacy, Matthew Crain gives internet surveillance a much-needed origin story by chronicling the development of its most important historical catalyst: web advertising.

Profit over Privacy uses the 1990s as its backdrop to show how the massive data-collection infrastructure that undergirds the internet today is the result of twenty-five years of technical and political economic engineering. Crain considers the social causes and consequences of the internet's rapid embrace of consumer monitoring, detailing how advertisers and marketers adapted to the existential threat of the internet and marshaled venture capital to develop the now-ubiquitous business model called "surveillance advertising." He draws on a range of primary resources from government, industry, and the press and highlights the political roots of internet advertising to underscore the necessity of political solutions to reign in unaccountable commercial surveillance.

Surveillance advertising is the result of political choices—not the inevitable march of technology. Unlike many other countries, the United States has no internet privacy law. A fascinating prehistory of internet advertising giants like Google and Facebook, Profit over Privacy argues that the internet did not have to turn out this way and that it can be remade into something better.

Biocivilisations - A New Look at...

Biocivilisations is an important, original rethinking of the mystery of life and its deep uncertainty, exploring the complex civilisations that existed on Earth long before humans.
What is life? Many scientists believe life can be reduced to ‘mechanistic’ factors, such as genes and information codes. Yet there is a growing army of scientists, philosophers and artists who reject this view. The gene metaphor is not only too simplistic but deeply misleading. If there is a way to reduce life to a single principle, that principle must acknowledge the creativity of life, turning genetic determinism on its head.
The term biocivilisations is the acknowledgement of this uncertainty of life, as opposed to a quasi-certainty of the human position governed by a narrow time window of the scientific revolution. Life existed without humans for more than 99.99 percent of the Earth’s existence. Life will also continue without humans long after our inevitable extinction.
In Biocivilisations, Dr Predrag Slijep?evi? shows how bacteria, amoebas, plants, insects, birds, whales, elephants and countless other species not only preceded human beings but demonstrate elements of how we celebrate human civilisation – complex communication, agriculture, science, art, medicine and more.
Humans must try to adopt this wisdom from other biocivilisations that have long preceded our own. By rethinking the current scientific paradigm, Dr Slijep?evi? makes clear that a transformation – from a naïve young species into a more mature species in tune with its surroundings – will save us from our own violence and the violence we inflict on the rest of our living planet.
