Synopsis

"Joke Origins" delves into the captivating world of humor, exploring its historical roots and psychological impact. The book examines why some jokes stand the test of time, while others fade away, revealing how humor mirrors and molds societies. It posits that a joke's longevity hinges on its historical context, psychological resonance, and adaptability to social shifts. Did you know that humor theories, such as incongruity theory, attempt to explain the cognitive processes that make us laugh? The book investigates these theories, providing insights into why certain jokes trigger a humorous response.

The book begins by laying a foundation in humor theory and historical analysis, then travels through time, examining jokes from ancient civilizations to the digital age. It considers the cultural significance of jokes, with case studies of enduring puns and outdated quips. The book also explores the psychological factors at play, such as emotional response and social context.

By drawing from historical texts, anthropological studies, and psychological research, "Joke Origins" provides a framework for understanding the evolution of humor and its reflection of human nature.

Against all evidence to the contrary, American men have come to believe that the world is tilted—economically, socially, politically—against them. A majority of men across the political spectrum feel that they face some amount of discrimination because of their sex. The authors of Gender Threat look at what reasoning lies behind their belief and how they respond to it. Many feel that there is a limited set of socially accepted ways for men to express their gender identity, and when circumstances make it difficult or impossible for them to do so, they search for another outlet to compensate. Sometimes these behaviors are socially positive, such as placing a greater emphasis on fatherhood, but other times they can be maladaptive, as in the case of increased sexual harassment at work. These trends have emerged, notably, since the Great Recession of 2008-09. Drawing on multiple data sources, the authors find that the specter of threats to their gender identity has important implications for men's behavior. Importantly, younger men are more likely to turn to nontraditional compensatory behaviors, such as increased involvement in cooking, parenting, and community leadership, suggesting that the conception of masculinity is likely to change in the decades to come.

The Netherlands had a great century in the 1600s, until it all ended about three-fourths along the way. Trading was all around, business was good. Their vast empire that reached across the world made money from spices, raw materials, metals, and so much more, with an extensive network of ships, merchants, and an entire army fleet.
The Dutch Golden Era was a time in Dutch history varying circa from 1588 (the start of the Dutch Republic) to 1672 (the "Catastrophe Year"), throughout which Dutch trade, science, and art, and the Dutch armed force, were amongst the world's best. The Eighty Years' War, which ended in 1648, controls the first area. Throughout the Dutch Republic, the Golden era lasted till the end of the century, when pricey fights like the Franco-Dutch War and the War of the Spanish Succession stimulated financial decrease.
    K. W. Swart, a historian, has called the Netherlands' change into the world's leading maritime and financial power the "Dutch Wonder."
In this book, you will learn all you need to know about this gigantic superpower that ruled a big part of the world for nearly an entire century: The Dutch Empire.

This book comprises five classic works of Chinese mysticism. Culturally, these are the companion works to Confucius’ thoughts, as expanded by Mencius. Confucianism is very much the Apollonian side of Chinese culture. It focuses on matters of ethics, hierarchy, responsibility, and social obligation. Daoism is the other side of the coin, focused on abstraction and uncertainty.
The two translators included in this volume were very different men. While they wrote in the same period, their audiences were distinct from one another, and this comes through in their differing approaches to the original texts they are working with. One was a missionary, looking to ensure that his fellow spreaders of the word could understand as completely and correctly as possible the culture that they had come into. The other was a curator at the British Museum, who popularized the first English translations for a thoroughly domestic market.
