Synopsis

"Harappan Script" explores the enduring mystery of the Harappan writing system, a still-undeciphered script from the Indus Valley Civilization. Understanding this Bronze Age script is crucial, as its decipherment could unlock insights into the civilization's social structure and potential linguistic connections to later South Asian populations. The book delves into the script's characteristics, considering its visual aspects and frequency of certain symbols, while also evaluating past attempts to break the code. Intriguingly, the directionality of the script has been determined, and inscriptions have been found on various materials, offering clues to its purpose. The book presents a comprehensive overview in three parts, beginning with an introduction to the script and its physical attributes. It then moves into a critical assessment of past decipherment attempts, categorizing them to highlight their limitations. Finally, the book explores whether there are links between the Harappan script and later South Asian scripts, such as Brahmi, analyzing linguistic and archaeological evidence. Ultimately, "Harappan Script" emphasizes a rigorous, evidence-based approach to decipherment, encouraging disciplined research grounded in verifiable data, moving beyond speculative interpretations.

The young woman was weaving a shawl. Jacqueline offered to purchase this square of colourful fabric, a few coins jingled on the table. A man immediately appeared and took the money.
In 1993 Jacqueline de Chollet founded The Veerni Project (Veer Ni, 'the brave woman' in Hindi) which strives to uplift women and girls, to break the cycle of poverty and gender inequality, and provide them with essential skills and knowledge through the establishment of a program to attend good secondary schools – universal secondary education being a sustainable goal of the United Nations – as well as training centres and healthcare facilities.
Secondary schooling is often unavailable in many rural settings particularly in the desert area of Rajasthan. By fostering self reliance and promoting women's rights through education, this uplifting story sheds a light on how such endeavours aim to create a sustainable impact on the lives of women, fostering a brighter future for generations to come so that women's voices can be heard in their communities and their countries.
This cultural and sociological adventure takes on a global dimension on the role of women, their struggles, their future and their hopes. These brave women will make the world a better place for all.

Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, known by his revolutionary name Lenin, was a pivotal figure in Russian history and a key architect of the Soviet Union. Born on April 22, 1870, in Simbirsk, Russia, Lenin came from an upper-middle-class family. His life and legacy are closely intertwined with the establishment of the first socialist state in the modern world. From 1917 until his death in 1924, Lenin served as the head of government of Soviet Russia, and later the Soviet Union, where he oversaw the transformation of the country into a one-party socialist state ruled by the Communist Party.
Lenin’s path to power was shaped by both personal tragedy and intellectual transformation. The execution of his older brother, Alexander, in 1887 for attempting to assassinate Tsar Alexander III profoundly impacted Lenin, pushing him toward revolutionary socialist ideas. In his youth, Lenin showed promise as a student but was expelled from Kazan Imperial University for his involvement in anti-Tsarist protests. He subsequently pursued a legal degree, which laid the groundwork for his later work as a political theorist. By 1893, he had moved to Saint Petersburg, where he became deeply involved in Marxist activism, organizing workers and intellectuals against the oppressive Tsarist regime.

Xenophon’s The Art of Horsemanship is a highly unusual text in the corpus of Classical Greek literature. It is a short survey on the various aspects of care for horses as seen by a highly experienced rider from the 5th century BCE. It is particularly notable because so many of its observations are relevant to the modern rider. Xenophon, friend of Socrates and professional soldier, is best known as the author Anabasis, the vivid account of a failed military expedition deep into Persia.

The Art of Horsemanship is very different in tone and content – a practical study from deep personal knowledge gained from working with horses, but none the less fascinating.

Xenophon considers what features and qualities to look for in a horse – among them broad chest, wide nostrils, prominent eye, supple knees, positive manner– and the sound of the hoof, which indicates good feet. (The ancient Greeks did not shoe their horses). There are even useful tips on approaching the horse to avoid conflict. He discusses training over different terrains and many other useful tips. The translator, Morris H. Morgan, provides extensive notes, not just on technical pointers such as mounting without stirrups or saddle, but also by comparing contemporary sculptures where artists took licence over reality. Furthermore, Morgan provides a fascinating essay The Greek Riding-Horse, which is an extended commentary on Xenophon. Also on this recording is Xenophon’s On The Cavalry General, a second treatise on horsemanship, but taking a different perspective.

Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France; Térézia Tallien, the most beautiful woman in Europe; and Juliette Récamier, muse of intellectuals, had nothing left to lose. After surviving incarceration and forced incestuous marriage during the worst violence of the French Revolution of 1789, they dared sartorial revolt. Together, Joséphine and Térézia shed the underwear cages and massive, rigid garments that women had been obliged to wear for centuries. They slipped into light, mobile dresses, cropped their hair short, wrapped themselves in shawls, and championed the handbag. Juliette made the new style stand for individual liberty.

The erotic audacity of these fashion revolutionaries conquered Europe, starting with Napoleon. Everywhere a fashion magazine could reach, women imitated the news coming from Paris. It was the fastest and most total change in clothing history. Two centuries ahead of its time, it was rolled back after only a decade by misogynist rumors of obscene extravagance.

New evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. This is a story for our time: of a revolution that demanded universal human rights, of self-creation, of women empowering each other, and of transcendent glamor.

This audiobook includes bonus lectures from the author's "Clothing" course she teaches as professor of art history at Barnard College, Columbia University.
