Synopsis

Final Lighthouse Calls explores the gripping, true accounts of lighthouse keepers facing unimaginable disasters, relying on their radios as their only connection to the outside world. The book examines maritime history through the lens of these isolated figures, highlighting their human resilience and the psychological impact of their remote existence. Learn how these keepers, vital to maritime navigation and shipping routes, battled not only the elements but also profound loneliness.

The book progresses from the history of lighthouses and the evolution of maritime technology to detailed accounts of specific disasters, using radio transcripts and historical records to reconstruct events. It delves into the psychological toll on the keepers, analyzing their final communications to reveal their courage and despair. One notable insight is how these keepers, despite their isolation, played a crucial role in guiding ships through treacherous waters, a testament to their dedication.

That government is best which governs least is the famous opening line of this essay. The slavery crisis inflamed New England in the 1840s and 1850s. The environment became especially tense after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. A lifelong abolitionist, Thoreau delivered an impassioned speech which would later become Civil Disobedience in 1848, just months after leaving Walden Pond. The speech dealt with slavery, but at the same time excoriated American imperialism, particularly the Mexican–American War. Thoreau asserts that because governments are typically more harmful than helpful, they therefore cannot be justified. Democracy is no cure for this, as majorities simply by virtue of being majorities do not also gain the virtues of wisdom and justice. The judgment of an individual's conscience is not necessarily inferior to the decisions of a political body or majority, and so "[i]t is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right.... Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice." He adds, "I cannot for an instant recognize as my government [that] which is the slave's government also." from Wikipedia

Humans produce what the aliens crave. They keep us on factory farms. They pump us full of glorious hormones.
It began with a physical exam. They probed and explored my body while making me watch a terrifying video.
Then they put me in a holding cell with my new companion—a computer that can read my mind.
It doesn’t matter what I say, it knows how to influence and manipulate me. It’s designed to milk me dry. That’s why I’m here—I’m livestock.
Day by day, I can feel my body morphing. The need to be milked grows stronger and stronger. I’m no longer a man.
    I’m a hucow.

Early eighteenth century England saw the criminal element bargaining with magistrates and lawyers to be released or receive lenient sentences. Neither party could be trusted and the situation grew worse. Enter famed author Henry Fielding, who had a strong social conscience and served as a magistrate. In addition to this treatise, he began a register of convicted criminals, and recruited six full-time, paid constables - known colloquially as "The Bow Street Runners" and hailed as the forerunners of the modern police force. - Summary by Lynne Thompson

In 1996, the first independent national report on the state of Australia’s environment found that we faced serious problems. With increasing urgency, five subsequent reports declared those problems were all getting worse, each calling for immediate action to protect our future. The 2021 report determined that, ‘Overall, the state and trend of the environment of Australia are poor and deteriorating as a result of increasing pressures from climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and resource extraction,’ and warned of the dramatic impact on our health and living standards. It is now clearer than ever that the consequences of long-term inaction are upon us.Accelerating climate change and the loss of our unique biodiversity are the most obvious signs of the grim outlook for future generations of Australians. But the international trends are equally worrying, with quixotic economic systems casting doubt on the wisdom of running down our domestic production of essential goods and services in favour of a dependence on trade. It is no exaggeration to conclude that Australian society itself is at risk.In Australia on the Brink, Ian Lowe argues that the essential first steps in addressing these threats are stabilising the global climate and protecting our local biota. We must also change the emphasis of resource extraction from a damaging reliance on trade to improving our capacity to meet our own needs. This is our best – perhaps our only – chance of restoring a sense of social stability, and the equality of opportunity that was once a hallmark of this country.
