Minorities and illegal aliens were scapegoated for the nation's woes, and dissenters daring to oppose the regime found themselves attacked by the Faux Outlet for News and Entertainment, whisked away to detention camps, or forced into exile. In retelling the stories of radicals and reactionaries, statesmen and demagogues, cultural producers and political censors, Herodotease reveals a polarized Amerika not unlike that of our own contentious age. Woven into the fabric of the narrative are a plethora of vintage photographs, historical artifacts, and propaganda art, all courtesy of The Wolfsonian–Florida International University. While included with the aim of bringing the persons and events of the 1930s back to life, many of these illustrations have been purposefully manipulated or supplied with deliberately deceptive descriptions to challenge those persons who believe everything they see, to think again.   Self-regulation can be defined in various ways. In the most basic sense, it involves controlling one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts to pursue long-term goals. More specifically, emotional self-regulation refers to managing disruptive emotions and impulses. In other words, to think before acting. It also reflects the ability to cheer yourself up after disappointments and work in a way consistent with your deepest values. 
  It's easy to see how a lack of self-regulation will cause problems in life. A child who yells or hits other children out of frustration will not be famous among peers and may face reprimands at school. An adult with poor self-regulation skills may lack self-confidence and self-esteem and have trouble handling stress and frustration. Often, this might be expressed in anger or anxiety. In more severe cases, it may be diagnosed as a mental disorder. 
  Self-regulation is also essential because it allows you to follow your deeply held values or social conscience and express yourself appropriately. If you value academic achievement, it will enable you to study instead of slack off before a test. 
  Many students do not possess the self-regulatory skills they need to become high academic performers.  
  Some students have found ways to regulate their learning and develop a system of control that shields them from motivational interference and conflict. Limiting distractions and using music to tune out distractions are students' most common self-regulatory strategies to manage motivational interference and conflict. Other students use athletics.

  First Guns The: The History and...

  The Chinese developed what were later dubbed the “Four Great Inventions of China,” and one of those was none other than gunpowder, which was developed no later than the 9th century and was being used for military purposes by the 11th century. Its use slowly spread through South Asia and the Middle East before making it to Europe in the late 13th century.  
  For a time it was a mere curiosity, but its destructive power and military potential would be realized quickly. The first record of a cannon in Europe comes from a manuscript written in 1326, which has an illustration showing an armored man with what looks like a slow match lighting a vase-shaped object. This crude cannon was called a pot de fer in French and vasi in Italian.  
  While medieval engineers developed new types of cannons and explosives capable of destroying walls and castles, others were making the first handguns possible. European sources first mentioned the widespread use of handgonnes, as they were often called, in the late 14th century, precisely the time when gunpowder became cheaper. These were short metal barrels stuck on the end of wooden hafts that could be tucked under the arm, the powder being lit through a touchhole with the free hand. While they were not terribly accurate and had a shorter range and slower rate of fire than longbows or crossbows, they had the advantage of being better able to punch through armor than longbows and crossbows, and they were simple to make and use.  
  By the late 15th century, handgonners had become a major part of the leading armies, and weapons that relied on gunpowder would remain a staple of warfare throughout the 19th century, paying deadly homage to one of history’s most important inventions. Of course, that would also bring about innovative new military strategies, and some of the first people to think outside of the box would be credited with putting together the makings of the first modern armies.
