Beschreibung

Bottle Cap Seals explores the surprisingly significant history and technology behind the humble bottle cap, a seemingly simple invention with far-reaching consequences. From its inception in 1892, the crown cork bottle cap revolutionized food and beverage preservation, impacting storage, distribution, and even consumer health.

The book details the evolution of bottle cap design, materials, and manufacturing, highlighting how innovations in this area spurred advancements in the broader packaging industry. The book examines the cultural, economic, and societal forces that shaped bottle cap development, illustrating how this seemingly trivial object reflects larger trends in industrial design and technology.

For example, early bottle caps utilized materials like cork and tin, while modern iterations incorporate plastics and specialized sealants, each reflecting advancements in materials science and manufacturing processes. These advancements, supported by historical patents and industry reports, demonstrate how a simple closure mechanism became a pivotal element in global commerce.

The book unfolds chronologically, beginning with pre-1892 closure methods and culminating in an examination of modern bottle cap technologies and their implications for sustainability and recycling. By viewing the bottle cap as a lens, the book provides a unique perspective on the intricate relationship between innovation, manufacturing, and consumer culture, revealing how seemingly insignificant objects can have a profound impact on the world.

Our nation's transportation system is crumbling. But as acclaimed scholar and ACLU president Deborah Archer warns in Dividing Lines, before we can think about rebuilding and repairing, we must consider the role race has played in transportation infrastructure, from the early twentieth century and into the present day.

As Archer demonstrates, the success of the Civil Rights movement and the fall of Jim Crow in the 1960s did not mean the end of segregation. With state-sanctioned racism no longer legal, officials across the country turned to transportation infrastructure to keep Americans divided. A wealthy white neighborhood could no longer be "protected" by racial covenants and segregated shops, but a multilane road, with no pedestrian crossings, could be built along its border to make it difficult for people from a lower-income community to visit. Highways could not be routed through Black neighborhoods based on the race of their residents, but those neighborhoods' lower property values—a legacy of racial exclusion—could justify their destruction.

Drawing on a wealth of sources, including interviews with people who now live in the shadow of highways and other major infrastructure projects, Archer presents a sweeping, national account—from Atlanta and Houston to Indianapolis and New York City—of our persistent divisions.

Egypt's geographical isolation and the unique geography of the Nile Valley are thought to have been responsible for its long existence. Because of this military control, astronomical concepts in Egypt became so ingrained and inseparable from everyday concerns that they became an integral part of Egyptian life. As your gaze rises to the horizons of Egypt, you can see the movement of the stars and planets: the climatic conditions never change, ensuring a similar seasonal cycle each year. Besides this, Egypt also enjoys a cloudless sky almost all the time and a location in latitude that allows even the most densely populated regions of the starry heavens to be viewed.

When scholars study the history of the ancient Near East, several wars that had extremely brutal consequences (at least by modern standards) often stand out. Forced removal of entire populations, sieges that decimated entire cities, and wanton destruction of property were all tactics used by the various peoples of the ancient Near East against each other, but the Assyrians were the first people to make war a science. When the Assyrians are mentioned, images of war and brutality are among the first that come to mind, despite the fact that their culture prospered for nearly 2,000 years.
Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites. Indeed, Assyria (Biblical Shinar) and the Assyrian people played an important role in many books of the Old Testament and are first mentioned in the book of Genesis: “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech, and Akkad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land went forth Ashur and built Nineveh and the city Rehoboth and Kallah.” (Gen. 10:10-11). Although the Biblical accounts of the Assyrians are among the most interesting and are often corroborated with other historical sources, the Assyrians were much more than just the enemies of the Israelites and brutal thugs.

BEING ECLIPSED describes women’s lives under the care of the Church and State in Ireland at the beginning of the mid-19th century throughout the 20th century. It gives an overview of women who had to turn to prostitution out of necessity in order to survive, and also on nuns who were put in charge of them under catholic church rule creating a double-standard. Women were treated as the “Social Evil” when they were not considered pure and innocent by State and Church. This ignorant behaviour let basically to failing women instead of protecting them within society.
