Synopsis

Our 74th issue features an essay from Norman Spinrad, the sort of non-fiction feature I’d like to see more of here in the future. (In fact, we have an interesting essay from Harlan Ellison coming up in an issue or two, too.) And I plan to resume running author interviews shortly as well.

This issue features an original story by Neil Plakcy, plus more recent tales by James A. Heart and Phyllis Ann Karr, plus classics by Norbert Davis, Ray Bradbury, Frank Belknap Long, and Edmond Hamilton. And no issue would be complete without a Hal Charles solve-it-yourself mystery.

Here’s this issue’s lineup:Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:

“Flaking Out in Wilton Manors,” by Neil Plakcy [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“A Conundrum In Winter,” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“Trip Among the Bluebonnets,” by James A. Hearn [short story]“A Knotty Problem,” by Hal Meredith [short story]“Dead Man’s Chest,” by Norbert Davis [novelet]

Non-Fiction:

“An SF Manifesto,” by Norman Spinrad [essay]

Science Fiction & Fantasy:

“Two Days Out of Sludgepocket,” by Phyllis Ann Karr [short story]“The Shape of Things,” by Ray Bradbury [short story]“Galactic Heritage,” by Frank Belknap Long [short story]“Regulations,” by Murray Leinster [short story]“Transuranic,” by Edmond Hamilton [novelet]

Death slays me, and I let him . . .

Kingdoms are broken. The world has shifted.

We are not the same as we once were.

The queen is no longer the queen, but I am expected to take her place. The tricky part is I'm not sure I want that responsibility. My heart screams for Death while he stays as far away as possible, believing in the prophecy, whereas I believe in us.

But sometimes, that simply isn't enough.

The real question now is . . . what do I do?

    Contains mature themes.

Written in 1816, when she was only nineteen Mary Shelley’s novel of “The Modern Prometheus” chillingly dramatised the dangerous potential of life begotten upon a laboratory table. A frightening creation myth for our own time. Frankenstein remains one of the greatest horror stories ever written and is an undisputed classic of its kind.

"[A] riveting, and original, achievement."—WIREDFrom award-winning Spanish author Ray Loriga comes a dystopian novel about authority, manipulation, and the disappearance of privacy that “calls to mind The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood [and] Blindness by José Saramago” (Alfaguara Prize Winner Citation). Ten long years have passed since war first broke out, and one couple still does not know the whereabouts of their children, or what their country is even fighting for. They follow orders and their lives go by simply, routinely, until—one day—a mute boy walks onto their property. When the authorities announce that the area needs to be evacuated and that everyone must relocate to “the transparent city,” the three leave together. At first, the city proves to be a paradise: a stunning glass dome of endless highways, buildings, trains, and markets. Everything its inhabitants need is provided to them—food, protection, shelter—and the family quickly, unquestioningly, settles into their new life. But, soon, a sinister underlay begins to emerge. Neither secrets nor walls are permitted here, and strict order, authoritarian calm, and transparency must always reign supreme. In a society in which everything private is public, the most chilling portent of our future emerges. Surrender is an urgent novel about dignity and rebellion and the lengths we go to preserve love, hope, and humanity."Loriga envisions in this gripping tale an unsettling dystopia in which all secrets are forbidden...This memorable page-turner will appeal to fans of Brave New World."—Publishers Weekly

Following on from Book 1 – The Kingdom of Solara - Love Triumphs
King Voltar of the neighbouring Kingdom of Noctis has been insulted as he was promised his son Prince Theron would by married to Princess Elara daughter by King Oberon of Solara.
King Voltar declares war on Solara and initially overwhelms the lesser army but Queen Titania's fairy army comes to the rescue and defeats the attackers.
In the process she is wounded and King Oberon swiftly comes to her aid despite their long term estrangement and they both realise they still love each other and the two tribes become as one again.
This is the second of six audiobooks in the series, the others will become available in the very near future and I do hope you enjoy this second installment, and it's only $3, all subsequent will remain at that price as I would not like price to be a barrier to your enjoyment.
I have worked very hard and meticulously to provide you with an enjoyable experience, the initial opening credit music which does run to approximately 2 minutes sets the scene, so to speak, harp, violin, glockenspiel in a classical but uplifting form. The closing music ends the tale on a more restrained note and at about 2 minutes and the same musical instruments but more dreamy and ethereal effect.
The story itself runs to about 13 minutes is is narrated in my own voice.
I do hope you and your family, if applicable, enjoy this audiobook and let me know what you think, there are a lot more to come!
