  From the 1880s to the 1950s, the Harvey Girls went west to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway. At a time when there were "no ladies west of Dodge City and no women west of Albuquerque," they came as waitresses, but many stayed and settled, founding the struggling cattle and mining towns that dotted the region. Interviews and historical research help recreate the Harvey Girl experience. The accounts are personal, but laced with the history the women lived: the dust bowl, the depression, and anecdotes about some of the many famous people who ate at the restaurants—Teddy Roosevelt, Shirley Temple, Bob Hope, to name a few.

  Anaxagoras - Mind and Cosmos in...

  Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, born around 500 BCE, was a pre-Socratic philosopher whose ideas bridged the gap between the earlier Milesian school and the more developed metaphysical and scientific theories of later Greek philosophy. His life and work significantly influenced subsequent thinkers, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. 
  Early Life and Education: 
  Anaxagoras was born in Clazomenae, a city in Ionia, an area known for its vibrant intellectual culture. His early education exposed him to the philosophies of Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, laying the groundwork for his own philosophical inquiries. He later moved to Athens, where he became a prominent figure in the intellectual circles of the time. 
  Philosophical Innovations: 
  Anaxagoras is best known for his introduction of the concept of Nous (Mind or Intellect), which he posited as the organizing principle of the cosmos. Unlike his predecessors who sought a single material principle as the origin of all things, Anaxagoras argued that the universe is governed by a rational, intelligent principle, Nous, which imparts order and structure to the chaotic flux of matter.

  Spanish Empire - How One of...

  The marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile in the late 15th century laid the foundation for what would become the Spanish Empire. Their union created a personal alliance between the two powerful kingdoms, forming the basis for modern Spain. This confederation of the Crowns of Castile and Aragon brought together Iberia's economic and military strength under the House of Trastámara, although the two crowns remained legally distinct. The union proved significant because it enabled them to share governance over various regions and kingdoms, particularly in the eastern Mediterranean. 
  Their reign saw major successes, most notably the Christian reconquest of the Muslim Kingdom of Granada, completed in 1492. This victory not only unified the Iberian Peninsula but also earned Ferdinand and Isabella the title of "Catholic Monarchs," a recognition granted by Pope Alexander VI. While Isabella focused on consolidating power in Iberia, Ferdinand directed his attention toward expanding influence abroad, pursuing military campaigns in North Africa, France, and Italy. 
  Despite their achievements, the concept of "Early Modern Spain" as a coherent political entity can be somewhat misleading. The Habsburg monarchy that succeeded Ferdinand and Isabella was a hybrid structure, with no formal name to describe the territories collectively. During the Early Modern period, the term "Spain" often referred to the entire Iberian Peninsula in a geographical rather than a political sense, reflecting a continuation of medieval traditions.

  On November 11, 1940, 21 slow, canvas-covered British warplanes, launched from the carrier Illustrious, attacked the harbor at the Italian port of Taranto and put most of the Italian navy out of commission. This all-but-forgotten operation, the authors argue, deserves historical recognition as an inspirational precedent for the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor 13 months later. Taranto demonstrated that battleships in a shallow, heavily defended harbor could be sunk by a handful of torpedo-bombers. That lesson Adm.
