'An intriguing read and I really enjoyed it. I think the author caught the era just right' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ real reader review
December 1922, and society dressmaker Jemima Flowerday receives a letter from Lady Hamlash of Merry Beggars Hall, requesting three new gowns for the Christmas season. Lady Hamlash does not travel, so Jemima will need to visit the Hall in deepest Suffolk to work in situ.
The commission appeals to Jemima for more than one reason. It will bring her some much-needed income. More interestingly, the remote manor house was the scene of a grisly murder earlier that year, when Lady Hamlash, inspecting her plants in the walled garden, found a man's severed head beneath a terracotta asparagus cloche.
The murder was never solved.
Jemima, addicted to mystery novels and with a proud history of solving crimes in her own world, is sure she can crack the case. That ambition becomes a little more complicated when, within hours of her arrival at Merry Beggars Hall, the household cook dies in front of her…

Not all monsters belong to the movies . . .

In the fall of 2008, John Carver's older brother, Owen, goes missing. He is found dead a few days later, his body torn apart by the local wildlife. Despite reports of strange noises heard at the time of Owen's disappearance, the police rule the tragedy as "a death by misadventure."

Fast forward to the summer of 2009.

To cope with his brother's passing, John dives into the art of filmmaking. Armed with a camcorder and his two closest friends, Ali and Becca, he begins work on a horror movie with the hopes of winning the local Harvest Festival Short Film Contest and a prize of a thousand dollars. The work proves difficult but rewarding.

Until, while gathering footage one night, the trio cross paths with something inhuman.

And a new question now burns in John's mind: Is this the creature responsible for his brother's death? He doesn't know for certain, but he won't stop until he finds out the truth.

    Even if it kills him.

Los Angeles, 1916: Photographer Bill Ogden has opened a portrait studio in the seedy noir world of early Hollywood, where he is joined by his granddaughter, Flavia—a woman in need of a fresh start after bludgeoning her drunken, abusive husband to death in Wichita. Though his business is mainly legit, Bill finds himself brushing up against the “blue movie” porn industry growing in the shadows of the motion picture mainstream.

When a series of grisly murders take place across the city, Bill and his capable granddaughter are pulled into events as tricky and tangled as anything this side of The Big Sleep. We meet dreamers, opportunists, washed-up former stars and starry-eyed newcomers, a cast of unforgettable characters living on the margins looking to make a quick buck, launch a career, or just keep their family together.

The Devil Raises His Own is at once a stripped-down noir thriller and a panoramic look at Los Angeles at the beginning of motion pictures—a Boogie Nights set in the era of D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin from one of the best crime novelists working today.

Small town justice comes with a price

Ten years ago, in the pine-shaded town of Savage Ridge, Nick, Emmy, and Pete murder their high school classmate, Sammy Saint John.

His body is never found, and no arrests are made. The three friends make a pact to leave Savage Ridge and never return...

Now, each is drawn home, seemingly by chance or fate. But it's neither: Private Investigator Sloane Yo has brought them back to finally answer for their crime.

The noose begins to tighten. But with each stone turned over in pursuit of justice, the long-buried secrets of Savage Ridge, and Sloane's employers – the ruthless Saint John family – start to come to light.

What aren't they telling Sloane? Is Sammy Saint John the only victim? And when the truth is finally revealed, whose side will she choose?

For fans of Chris Whitaker's We Begin at the End, Savage Ridge is a shattering, propulsive why-dunnit crime thriller set deep in the pines of the American Pacific Northwest..

'Full of tension and suspense. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. Brilliant!' Simon McCleave

'Dark, gut-punching and satisfying all at once. Expert handling of characters and pace, and a glorious evisceration of moral duty!' Rachel Lynch
