Beschreibung

Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik Ibn Tufayl's 'The Awakening of the Soul' stands as an intellectual landmark at the intersection of philosophy, spirituality, and literature. Rendered within its pages is a profound philosophical narrative exploring the self-taught man's ascent to the ultimate truth without society's constraints—an allegory of human potential and intellectual enlightenment. This contemplative novel resonates with Sufi mysticism and Neo-Platonic thought, as it addresses themes such as isolation, learning, and the connection between the soul and the divine, all articulated through a literary style that harmonizes narrative with philosophical discourse, indicative of its Andalusian-Islamic heritage. DigiCat Publishing's meticulous reproduction honors the text as a pivotal cultural heritage for modern audiences to engage with its enduring questions. Ibn Tufayl, a polymath of the 12th-century Andalusian world, infused his single, surviving work with the breadth of his erudition. Trained in medicine, astronomy, and philosophy, his scholarly pursuits clearly influenced this philosophical treatise, as did his role at the court of Marrakech, where his proximity to the political and intellectual elite undoubtedly shaped his insights into human nature and the pursuit of knowledge. 'The Awakening of the Soul' is not only a reflection of Ibn Tufayl's storied life but also an invitation to readers to embark on their own journey of intellectual discovery. Scholars, students, and lay readers with an interest in the philosophical traditions and literatures of the Islamic Golden Age will find 'The Awakening of the Soul' an essential read. Its timeless exploration of existential queries and the human condition transcends its historical context. DigiCat's dedication to preserving and sharing this work ensures that Ibn Tufayl's philosophical legacy continues to inspire and challenge contemporary readers in their quest for understanding the nature of the self and the wider universe.

In fourth-century India one of the great geniuses of Buddhism, Vasubandhu, sought to reconcile the diverse ideas and forms of Buddhism practiced at the time and demonstrate how they could be effectively integrated into a single system. This was the Yogacara movement, and it continues to have great influence in modern Tibetan and Zen Buddhism.

Vasubandhu's "Thirty Verses" lay out a path of practice that integrates the most powerful of Buddhism's psychological and mystical possibilities. Although Yogacara has a reputation for being extremely complex, the "Thirty Verses" distills the principles of these traditions to their most practical forms, and this book follows that sense of focus; it goes to the heart of the matter—how do we alleviate suffering through shedding our emotional knots and our sense of alienation?

This is a great introduction to a philosophy, a master, and a work whose influence reverberates throughout modern Buddhism.

Their second album, Days of Future Passed, which was released in 1967, was a fusion of rock with classical music which established the band as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. The band has sold 70 million albums worldwide, which includes 18 platinum and gold LPs. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. “As you read this blurb, you know you would never confess to a crime you didn’t commit. Read this compelling study and you’ll change your mind. Dr. Kassin lays bare the dirty tricks used by police to make innocents confess. And he describes, convincingly, what should be done to stop them.”– John Grisham, #1 New York Times-bestselling authorWritten by the world's leading expert on false confessions, this landmark book reveals the psychology behind why innocent men, women, and children, intensely stressed and befuddled by the promises, threats, trickery, and deception of a police interrogation, are duped into confession, no matter how horrific the crime. Featuring riveting case studies, highly original research, work done in tandem with the Innocence Project, and quotes from individuals who confessed to crimes they did not commit, Duped tells the story of how this happens, how the system turns a blind eye, and how to make it stop. Why do people confess to crimes they did not commit? And, surely, those cases must be rare? In fact, it happens all the time—in police stations, workplaces, public schools, and the military. Psychologist Saul Kassin, the world’s leading expert on false confessions, explains how interrogators trick innocent people into confessing, and then how the criminal justice system deludes us into believing these confessions.Duped reveals how innocent men, women, and children, intensely stressed and befuddled by lawful weapons of psychological interrogation, are induced into confession, no matter how horrific the crime. By featuring riveting case studies, highly original research, work by the Innocence Project, and quotes from real-life exonerees, Kassin tells the story of how false confessions happen, and how they corrupt forensics, witnesses, and other evidence, force guilty pleas, and follow defendants for their entire lives— even after they are exonerated by DNA.Starting in the 1980’s, Dr. Kassin pioneered the scientific study of interrogations and confessions. Since then, he has been on the forefront of research and advocacy for those wrongfully convicted by police-induced false confessions. Examining famous cases like the Central Park jogger case and Amanda Knox case, as well as stories of ordinary innocent people trapped into confession, Dr. Kassin exposes just how widespread this problem is. Concluding with actionable solutions and proposals for legislative reform, Duped shows why the stigma of confession persists and how we can reform the criminal justice system to make it stop.
