Synopsis

The madman. The magistrix. The monster.
Even as she opens the letter, Aurelia knows it is already too late. Still, she has no choice but to answer the summons, though she fears she already knows what she will find.
High in a cold and crumbling castle, a bitter man discovers the secret substance of life. A hideous creature opens its eyes. A mechanical golem finds his heart. This pair of abominations of science know they were destined for each other, but they continue to live only at their maker's pleasure.
Only Aurelia can save them from the fractured mind of her former friend. But first, she has to save herself.

I survived the plague that killed millions.
I escaped from the ravenous monsters when the dead refused to stay dead.
I ran for my life when a last-ditch effort to contain the spread of the infection did nothing but blast the last remaining survivors to smithereens.
Yet not all hope is lost.
Along the way, I made friends for life. Former enemies became allies. We’ve all become part of the Enclave—a survivor stronghold now home to thousands, among them women, children, and entire families. Together, we do everything to beat the odds.
But resources are running low. Cut off from energy, with barely enough food to see up to the end of the week, hunkering down and waiting for the zombie apocalypse to end is not an option.
Someone has to go out there and fight.
That someone is going to be me and my team—and those I still consider foe rather than friend. But we need to work together, or else none of us stand a chance to survive—another week, another day, another hour.

These five chilling nineteenth-century ghost stories from both sides of the Atlantic include some of the best in the genre. Bierce is well-known, but To Let by B. M. Croker and The Upper Berth provide moments to tingle the spine, as does An Account of Some Strange Disturbances by Le Fanu. This collection, which is further enhanced by suitably chilling music, was originally released under the title Classic Chilling Tales III.

The papers call me “the gentleman killer.” I wrapped the throat of my first victim in the silk scarf with which I strangled her. That's what passes as a gentleman these days.I ask you: How do you reconcile a man who is capable of deep, tender love (because I've felt it), a man, who—by public standards—is a health reformer, assistant to the future British Prime Minister ,and the son-in-law of a wealthy industrialist, but who, when the moment overtakes him, kills women? I don't know what to make of it myself, but that's me. I've been told I have a philosopher's mind, that I'm ambitious and can do anything I set my mind to—but sometimes my sadomasochistic tendencies get the better of me.I don't venture judgement—on myself or anyone else. I'll leave that up to you.My name is Kilcairn, and these are my confessions.
