The setting of 1st and 2nd Maccabees is about a century and a half after the conquest of Judea by the Greeks under Alexander the Great. It tells how the Greek ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes attempted to suppress the Jewish religion, resulting in the Maccabean Revolt from 175 to 134 BCE. Originally included in the King James Bible, 1st and 2nd Maccabees is a thrilling historical account of the guerrilla warfare in which, with God's help, the Maccabean brothers, Judas, Jonathan and Simon were empowered to win extraordinary victories against vastly superior armies and restore an independent Jewish kingdom and religion. The Third Book of the Maccabees is recognised as Deuterocanonical Scripture by the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches. It is also included in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible.  It is considered to be apocrypha by most other church traditions. It tells the story of persecution of the Jews under Pharaoh Ptolemy IV Philopater (222–205 BC) whose plans to annihilate the Jews in Egypt are thwarted by God. This was some decades before the Maccabee uprising in Judea, as chronicled in 1 and 2 Maccabees.  The Fourth Book of Maccabees is a philosophical and theological treatise that explores the supremacy of reason over passion, particularly in the context of Jewish faith and martyrdom. While not part of the Hebrew Bible, it is included in some versions of the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament.Unlike the earlier Maccabees books, which focus on historical events, this text emphasizes the strength of faith and the power of rational thought in overcoming emotional and physical suffering. It uses the story of the martyrdom of Eleazar, a Jewish scribe, and the seven Maccabean brothers, who were tortured and killed by King Antiochus IV for refusing to abandon their religious practices, as its central narrative. Through these examples, Fourth Maccabees illustrates how devout adherence to God's law can empower believers to resist even the most extreme forms of temptation and suffering, making it a profound reflection on virtue, faith, and moral courage.British narrator, Christopher Glyn, brings these epic stories to life with an inspired and professional reading.

Values to be discussed include integrity, excellence, authenticity, compassion, generosity, accountability, kindness, and many more.

Dr. Evans provides insights based on biblical virtues derived from the Beatitudes as well as the rest of Christ's teachings. This book will give men and women a framework for personal growth and awareness. When we align ourselves with God's ways, and exhibit that behavior for our neighbors to see and benefit from, that's when real change occurs.

Endurance is the ability to persist despite difficulties, discomfort, or obstacles. It is the strength that keeps a person moving forward when challenges arise, whether in physical exertion, emotional struggles, or mental resilience. Unlike momentary bursts of effort, endurance is about sustained perseverance, the willingness to keep going even when progress is slow or the path ahead is uncertain. It is not just about surviving hardships but about continuing to push forward, adapting, and growing stronger in the process.
At its core, endurance is both a mental and physical quality. Physically, it enables athletes to push past fatigue, workers to maintain effort over long hours, and individuals to carry on through pain or exhaustion. Mentally, it is the resolve to withstand hardships, resist discouragement, and maintain focus even when the reward seems distant. While resilience is often associated with bouncing back from adversity, endurance is the ability to keep pressing forward despite obstacles. It requires patience, self-discipline, and an unwavering commitment to one’s goals.

Written for readers age 10 and up -- enjoyed by adults!Six-year-old Ludwig was sitting at the table, reading his Bible and praying, when Swedish soldiers stormed through the castle door. Ludwig looked up at the soldiers and then returned to his prayer and reading. The soldiers stopped and stared-then left. They said they could not ransack a place that God watched over.An unusually mature Christian at a very young age, Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf did not follow the course dictated by his noble birth but followed God's call even to the point of being banned from his native Saxony. Once destined for the royal court, the count instead became a spiritual father to millions.Count Zinzendorf opened his estate to persecuted Moravian Christians, and under his leadership this vibrant community launched the modern missions movement. Beginning at Herrnhut and traveling as far as Africa, America, and Russia, the bold believers of the Moravian Church planted seeds that continue to bear fruit even today.
