Synopsis

Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell, the ‘dinosaur’ Head of Sixth Form at Leighford High, just cannot get to grips with technology, and doesn’t see the need to know how to send a text or an email when a simple note or phone call will suffice. However, it soon becomes vital that he learns when some of his female pupils begin to receive strange and threatening messages, with the anonymous sender claiming to know intimate details about the girls’ personal lives. Max starts to receive messages too, and then two of the girls go missing. When a body is found it seems that the prank has taken a sinister turn, and Mad Max may well be the next target. Is the chance of him reaching retirement looking more unlikely by the day?

There had been two men in that boat. Two. Rylie is positive . . . ish.
Living with her parents may be driving her crazy, but not crazy enough to start conjuring up men in her mind—regardless of how long it had been since she’d had a date.
As an urban park ranger, Rylie is practically surrounded by men all day, every day. Making up more in her head would only complicate her life further.
When she confronts the one man remaining in the boat, he’s more eager to discuss her online dating profile than any possible wrongdoing. But he’s the last thing on her mind when bodies start turning up.
With a hardened criminal just escaped from prison as a prime suspect, Rylie is only too eager to let Luke handle this investigation. That is, until he arrests the guy she’s dating on suspicion of murder.
Caught between two men, Rylie takes it upon herself to dive in and do some digging of her own. But the truth isn’t always so forthcoming and could leave her jobless and . . . headless.

The seventh novel in the acclaimed Sean Stranahan mystery series: Scarecrows are appearing in the cliffs above the Smith River in Montana, and state investigator Harold Little Feather is trying to discover the culprit leaving the hay figures in the cliffs, with signs painted that read "No Smith River Mine - Not on My Watch." The event is related to a copper mine project that threatens the river, but his investigation takes an ominous turn when a little girl claims that a scarecrow chased her in the night.
At the same time, Sean Stranahan and his friend "Rainbow" Sam Meslik have been contracted as guides to float a party down the river, which includes the manager of the mine project and the president of "Save Our Smith", a grassroots organization devoted to stopping the project.
Both men grew up on the Smith on neighboring ranches. When a dead body is found in the park, it's revealed that the two have a shared history that runs much deeper and darker than their opposing viewpoints.
