Physicians for the People chronicles the remarkable stories of 241 Black doctors who practiced medicine in Alabama during the Jim Crow era. Historian Jack D. Ellis reveals the ingenuity and resilience of these trailblazing doctors who defied segregation by establishing hospitals and clinics and providing vital healthcare to underserved Black communities.

This meticulously researched work draws on archival sources, oral histories, and an unparalleled database to dismantle the myth of a monolithic medical system in the Jim Crow South. Jack D. Ellis argues that the post–Civil War lives of Black physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and midwives hold special significance, illuminating both the causes of health care disparities among African Americans and the reasons for their continued underrepresentation in the medical professions.

Offering much of interest to students and scholars of Black history, medical history, and the civil rights movement, Physicians for the People exposes the deliberate exclusion faced by Black doctors within the white medical establishment and their ongoing fight for racial equality in medicine.

Brown noise could be described as the intense sound of a jet engine, a wind tunnel, or the sound waves make during a storm. While this type of sound might not seem like it could be relaxing, many people with ADHD find that brown noise helps them turn off their brain, relax or focus.ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A person with ADHD has differences in brain development and brain activity that affect attention, the ability to sit still, and self-control.Teens and adults with ADHD actually need more "noise" to reach optimal cognitive functioning than people who don't have ADHD. This may seem counterintuitive, considering that individuals with ADHD struggle to focus and relax. But because brown noise plays lower frequencies at a higher sound level, the brain registers the sound as similar to its resting state. Many individuals with ADHD find that brown noise in particular is helpful for tapping into that sense of calm and focus they so desperately need. Some have described brown noise as a weighted blanket for their brain. This could mean that brown noise soothes the person with ADHD by calming the nervous system and restoring brain wave functioning to a neutral baseline.Brown noise is a sound that is played louder at a lower frequency. This supports rest, calmness, and relaxation because it's similar to the resting state of the brain. Parents of babies are often advised to make brown noise playlists for their children to help them fall asleep because this frequency is similar to the sounds they hear in their mother's womb.WHAT YOU GET:Our 12 hours brown noise audiobook!1. A Book About Books - Volume I of...

    E. H. Bernstein

This book is Volume I of a three volume book plus accompanying website, www.bookaboutbooks.com, which adds to subjects already in the book or presents some books and subjects not contained in the books. The other volumes are available from the same booksellers as this volume. Note this 2024 publication date is a corrected version of the original version of this volume published in 2018.
A Book about Books discusses what nonfiction books and subjects the author believes are important to know about. This book tries to point to problems in how we live and to see if books have any answers. Even though the books are complete, the author will update the website periodically in the future.
    E. H. Bernstein is a former librarian turned author. The subtitle of the book describes the author's objective: "A handbook in three volumes to a choice of essential books, writers and subjects in order to understand the world we live in, about 'big questions' and possible answers, about books and writers that may improve people's lives, about neglected writers, and other books and subjects."
A Book about Books attempts to share what the author has learned from nearly 50 years of nonfiction reading and to provide the reader with samples of the most important authors and subjects from that reading.
While the book is based on research, it is intended to be a handbook or guide by trying to make that research understandable to the general reader and to students, and for teachers--by pointing to what the author believes is missing from today's education. A curriculum proposal for college teachers is on the website.
Note about how the volumes are related: each chapter is on a separate subject. So the chapters can be read individually, but the full message requires reading all the volumes. Volume I is important, but preliminary to the more important Volumes II and III. Note also that the book is not just about books, since other sources are also mentioned.
The author believes we should listen to many voices, so the book draws on many types of writers from different times and countries.
The author says: A contemporary writer once said that one of the purposes of writing is that books should be useful. I hope that my book will be of use.
