Their ideas of civic duty, legal rights, and the importance of a written code of laws resonated with future leaders who saw the need for a balanced government where power was neither overly concentrated nor arbitrary. The Roman emphasis on civic responsibility established an early link between law and governance that would later inform the formation of the United States. 
  The enlightenment period ignited a profound transformation in political thinking. Philosophers such as John Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau wrote about natural rights, the separation of powers, and the social contract. Locke’s advocacy of life, liberty, and property laid the groundwork for the concept that governments exist to serve the people and that their authority is derived from the consent of the governed. Montesquieu’s writings on the separation of governmental power into branches to prevent tyranny became a key element in the design of the American political system. These ideas gained traction among colonial leaders, who saw in them the means to challenge the existing forms of monarchical and aristocratic rule.

  What explains the high levels of public confidence in the US military and does high confidence matter? In Thanks for Your Service, the eminent civil-military relations scholar Peter D. Feaver addresses this question and focuses on what it means for the military. Proprietary survey data show that confidence is partly based on public beliefs about the military's high competence, adherence to high professional ethics, and a determination to stand apart from the bitter divisions of partisan politics. However, as Feaver argues, confidence is also shaped by a partisan gap and by social desirability bias, the idea that some individuals express confidence in the military because they believe that is the socially approved attitude to hold. Not only does Feaver help us understand how and why the public has confidence in the military, but he also exposes problems that policymakers need to be aware of. Specifically, this book traces how confidence in the institution shapes public attitudes on the use of force and may not always reinforce best practices in democratic civil-military relations.

  Lawrence Joseph Scott was born in 1910 in Saskatchewan, Canada. His family made their way south and ended up in Alabama. In 1924, having finished 8th grade at the age of 14, L.J. lied about his age and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. 
  Sometime in the 1930s, L.J. was stationed in Peking, China. As a member of the famous China Marines, he performed his duties on horseback. For a period of time, his commanding officer was Captain Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, one of the most famous and decorated U.S. Marines. Years later, L.J. was transferred to Pearl Harbor, along with his wife, Cliz. They were there on December 7th, 1941. 
  After WWII ended, he retired to El Cajon, California. Later in life, L.J. took advantage of the G.I. Bill and attended Grossmont College, where he graduated Valedictorian with a G.P.A. of 4.0. He died in 1985 and was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. He is survived by his son Robert, and his daughters Bonnie and Sandra
