Beschreibung

"Urban Expansion" explores the dramatic transformation of America from a rural nation to an urban powerhouse during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book investigates the interwoven forces of immigration, industrialization, and urban development that reshaped the country. This period witnessed unprecedented growth as cities became melting pots of diverse cultures and centers of economic opportunity.

One intriguing aspect is how advancements in transportation, like the development of streetcar systems, directly influenced the expansion of residential areas and the emergence of distinct neighborhoods. The book argues that this rapid urbanization was not a natural occurrence, but the result of complex interactions between human actions, economic pressures, and political choices.

This volume uniquely connects immigration, industrialization, and urban development, revealing how they amplified each other. By using primary sources like census data and personal letters, the book offers both broad trends and nuanced individual experiences. It begins by setting the historical stage before the Civil War and then moves on to examine the impact of immigration, the rise of industrial capitalism, and the physical transformation of cityscapes.

The book highlights how the growth of factories led to new types of work and the creation of different social classes, while also bringing about urban challenges such as poverty and pollution. It is valuable for understanding how these historical patterns continue to influence modern urban planning and policy.

Imagine you are sick of the government. Bureaucrats and aristocrats are constantly telling you what to do, basically enforcing a totalitarian regime. Maybe this is not so hard to imagine after what has been happening in recent years. And then imagine you protest. But the government has come up with a new method to kill people: The guillotine. Way more efficient than simple beheading, some jerk at the top then decides that anyone who is suspicious of rebellion needs their head chopped off, like the crazy lady in Alice in Wonderland.
This is Robespierre’s legacy. The evil French guy knew hardly any boundaries. He was vicious, murderous, and not to be taken lightly.
One of the most widely known figures of the Reign of terror was Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre, a French attorney and statesman. He promoted universal manhood suffrage and the removal of both clergy celibacy and oppression as a member of the Constituent Assembly and the Jacobin Club. In 1791, Robespierre ended up being a singing advocate of male residents without a political voice, promoting for their limitless entry to the National Guard, public workplaces, and the right to bear arms in self-defense. Robespierre was a key figure in the agitation that led to the deposition of the French monarchy on August tenth, 1792, and the assembling of a National Convention. His purpose was to establish a single, indivisible France, equality before the law, the abolition of authorities, and the defense of direct democratic ideal visions.

In this excellent exposition of ancient Indian thought systems, the authors rig up an interesting debate among proponents of these systems, finally leading to the conclusions well established by Vedas and Upanishads.
The book is based on the well-known work namely The Brahma Sutra of Sage Badarayana.
A good book to get a quick introduction to Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Yoga, Teravada, Vijnyana Vada, Shoonya Vada, and Anekantavada and their contrast with the Upanishadic views.

While airplanes had never before appeared above the field of war, other aerial vehicles had already been in use for decades, and balloons had carried soldiers above the landscape for centuries to provide a high observation point superior to most geological features. The French used a balloon for this purpose at the Battle of Fleurus in 1794, and by the American Civil War, military hydrogen balloons saw frequent use, filled from wagons generating hydrogen from iron filings and sulfuric acid.
In fact, with advances in dirigible technology, many military thinkers and even aeronautical enthusiasts believed that blimps would remain the chief military aerial asset for the foreseeable future. These men thought airplanes would play a secondary role at best and might even prove a uselessly expensive gimmick soon to fade back into obscurity, leaving the majestic bulk of the dirigible as sole master of the skies.
The Zeppelins, slow and large as they were, proved to be easy targets for fire from the ground, so they were too vulnerable for reconnaissance in the warzone. Instead, they were used for the task of bombing targets. Bombs were dropped on Paris in August 1914, and Zeppelins bombed Belgian forces as the Germans advanced on Liège. The Germans also used them to bomb England’s eastern ports and London in an attempt to disrupt military supplies. On the other side, British pilots destroyed a Zeppelin on the ground at Düsseldorf.
This was bombing at its simplest; the explosives were kept on hooks on the side of the machines and dropped by a crew member by hand. These small forays into aerial bombardment barely even hinted at the bombing campaigns to come, but Zeppelin raids on Britain would continue for nearly four years, killing more than 500 people and injuring 1,300. These raids and the attempts to stop them would be carried out at the cutting edge of new technology.

“One of the great cartoonists of our time.” –New Yorker cartoonist Arnold Roth The remarkable story of one of America’s most prolific and beloved cartoonists, Al Jaffee, with dozens of original color illustrations. Jaffe’s career in cartooning stretches back to 1941—with early humor pieces for Timely Comics, a precursor to Marvel Comics—but the iconic artist remains best known for the brilliant Fold-In cartoons he invented at Bill Gaines’s Mad magazine in 1964. The cerebral and sardonic illustrations have inspired generations of Mad readers—including Stephen Colbert, R. Crumb, Gary Larson and Charles Shultz—to embrace a firm and healthy irreverence towards the status quo. New York Times columnist and bestselling author Mary-Lou Weisman (My Middle-Aged Baby Book) helps Jaffe tell his remarkable story.
