Beschreibung

Lost Cultural Artifacts explores the complex world of indigenous cultural heritage, focusing on the theft and repatriation of invaluable artifacts. It delves into the profound significance these objects hold for indigenous communities, representing not just art, but a living link to their history and identity. The book highlights the urgent need to address past wrongs and foster reconciliation through the return of these cultural treasures, arguing that repatriation is essential for preserving cultural heritage and empowering indigenous communities to reclaim their narratives.

The book examines the historical and social context surrounding artifact theft, including the legacy of colonialism and evolving museum practices. It meticulously documents case studies of artifact displacement from various regions, illustrating the devastating impact on indigenous communities. Furthermore, it explores the legal and ethical frameworks guiding repatriation efforts, including international conventions and indigenous rights declarations.

Structured in four parts, Lost Cultural Artifacts begins with an overview of cultural heritage and its importance. It progresses through case studies, legal frameworks, and culminates in a discussion of practical implications for repatriation. By challenging traditional narratives and prioritizing indigenous voices, this book advocates for a more inclusive and participatory approach to cultural preservation and social justice.

Narrator’s Note: an excellent book! Quite smart and thorough. Well written by the Editor of the Series.
Volume 16 of 27 in The American Nation: A History From Original Sources by Associated Scholars published by Harper Brothers (1904–1918). Edited by Albert Bushnell Hart, Professor of History at Harvard University.
In the Editor’s Introduction to the series: That a new history of the United States is needed, extending from the discovery down to the present time, hardly needs a statement. No such comprehensive work by a competent writer is now in existence. Individual writers have treated only limited chronological fields. Meantime there is a rapid increase of published sources and of serviceable monographs based on material hitherto unused. On the one side, there is a necessity for an intelligent summarizing of the present knowledge of American history by trained specialists; on the other hand, there is a need for a complete work, written in an untechnical style, which shall serve the instruction and the entertainment of the general reader.
From the Author’s Preface: Except perhaps the struggle between patriots and tories at the outbreak of the Revolution, no controversy in the history of the United States has aroused such passion and led to such momentous results as that between the advocates and the opponents of slavery … The book has the double purpose of describing the conditions of slavery and the state of mind of those interested in it or against it, and at the same time recording the events which mark the anti-slavery agitation.
It is hard for a son and grandson of abolitionists to approach so explosive a question with impartiality, but the book is intended to show that there was more than one side to the controversy and that both the milder form of opposition called antislavery and the extremer form called abolition were confronted by practical difficulties which to many public-spirited and conscientious men seemed insurmountable.

Dusty Tomes Audio Books are public domain books retrieved from history. If today’s technology had been available when first printed, they would be audio books already. I am grateful for the opportunity to record them now. Read online at archive.org
Narrator’s Note: I read only as written. These old books were once solid sellers for bookmen of their time. I believe they can shed light on their times and ours. I love obscure and remote literature, they are a distinct pleasure for me to read to you. These turn out to be distant and unknown only so long as they remain unread, or unheard. Aloha.

Winner of the 2007 Irving Lowens Book Award from the Society for American MusicWinner of IASPM's 2007 International Book AwardIn this exploration of the funk groove and its unique sounds, author Anne Danielsen takes an in-depth look at this under-explored genre. Danielsen concentrates on the golden age of funk in the late 1960s and the 1970s, focusing on two of the era's artists who made a substantial impact on the landscape of popular music: James Brown and George Clinton/Parliament. Aiming to understand funk not only as objectified musical meaning but also as lived experience, she begins with the musical events themselves and draws on her experiences as both a fan and a scholar to capture how their particular organization creates the funk listener's pleasure. Danielsen further examines issues surrounding race in the construction and consumption of this music, focusing her study with how white listeners responded to funk in the 1970s, and arguing that African American music has remained a means of catharsis and of dealing with pleasures of the body. Funk's crossover to international success among listeners of pop and rock music affected both the music itself and audiences' understanding of it. Presence and Pleasure shows us how.

Righteous Renegades: Once Hidden Heroes of the Holocaust
    By Quentin Drummond Anderson
As the Nazi regime tightened its grip across Europe, four diplomats waged a silent battle with bureaucracy itself. Chiune Sugihara, Raoul Wallenberg, Varian Fry, and Aristides de Sousa Mendes defied their governments to save thousands during the Holocaust.
The Nazi genocide operated through meticulous documentation and legal decrees. Escape required someone willing to break these very rules.
Japanese consul Sugihara issued thousands of unauthorized transit visas from Lithuania. Swedish diplomat Wallenberg arrived in Budapest in 1944, using forged documents and safe houses to rescue Hungarian Jews. American journalist Fry transformed an assignment in Vichy France into a covert rescue operation for intellectuals and refugees. Portuguese consul Sousa Mendes granted visas to thousands in Bordeaux against direct orders.
Their heroism came at tremendous cost. Some faced professional ruin, while others vanished into Soviet captivity. Recognition as Righteous Among the Nations came decades later.
Through gripping storytelling and extensive research, Anderson examines the ethical dilemmas these men confronted. Each was bound by government duty yet found moral courage to disobey. The book explores power structures, bureaucratic indifference, and how a single signature determined life or death.
More than historical account, Righteous Renegades reflects on individual responsibility within systems of power. In today's world of refugee crises and political oppression, these lessons remain profoundly relevant.
For readers of Erik Larson, Deborah Lipstadt, and Timothy Snyder, this essential addition to Holocaust literature poses a timeless question: When faced with injustice, would you have the courage to act?

The effort to destroy facts and make America ungovernable didn't come out of nowhere. It is the culmination of seventy years of strategic denialism. In On Disinformation, Lee McIntyre shows how the war on facts began, and how ordinary citizens can fight back against the scourge of disinformation that is now threatening the very fabric of our society. Drawing on his twenty years of experience as a scholar of science denial, McIntyre explains how autocrats wield disinformation to manipulate a populace and deny obvious realities, why the best way to combat disinformation is to disrupt its spread, and most importantly, how we can win the war on truth.

McIntyre goes through the history of strategic denialism to show how we arrived at this precarious political moment and identifies the creators, amplifiers, and believers of disinformation. On Disinformation lays out ten everyday practical steps that we can take as ordinary citizens—from resisting polarization to pressuring our Congresspeople to regulate social media—as well as the important steps our government (if we elect the right leaders) must take.

On Disinformation empowers us to save our republic from autocracy before it is too late.

Like many of the lives of famous Grecian heroes, Marcellus’ life was documented in Plutarch’s famous Parallel Lives. Although the Life of Marcellus is largely incomplete, it does give one of history’s only accurate representations of the political and military actions taken upon by Marcus Claudius Marcellus. Elected to the position of curule aedile after showing exceptional military valor, Marcellus went on to become one of Greece’s most sought-after warriors. Though his popularity never seemed to wane, it was ultimately that which he was best known for that took his life.
