Beschreibung

Comedic Misunderstandings explores the often-overlooked dark side of humor, examining historical instances where jokes, satire, and comedic performances have been misconstrued, leading to unintended social consequences.

It tackles the complexities of cross-cultural communication, revealing how a joke intended to unite can, instead, spark diplomatic crises or social unrest.

The book highlights that a joke's success hinges on external factors like social norms and political climate, emphasizing that comedic intent doesn't guarantee comedic reception.

The book uniquely emphasizes the potential pitfalls of humor rather than its positive aspects. It begins by introducing comedic theory, then progresses through case studies organized chronologically and thematically, illustrating how seemingly innocuous jokes have been misinterpreted in political satire, stand-up comedy, and online platforms.

By exploring the historical evolution of comedic interpretation, the book provides a framework for mitigating misinterpretations in various fields, from diplomacy to education, making it a valuable resource for anyone seeking to navigate the complex landscape of humor.

As the news shows us every day, contemporary American culture and politics are rife with people who demonize their enemies by projecting their own failings and flaws onto them. But this is no recent development. Rather, as John Corrigan argues here, it’s an expression of a trauma endemic to America’s history, particularly involving our long domestic record of religious conflict and violence.

Religious Intolerance, America, and the World spans from Christian colonists’ intolerance of Native Americans and the role of religion in the new republic’s foreign-policy crises to Cold War witch hunts and the persecution complexes that entangle Christians and Muslims today. Corrigan reveals how US churches and institutions have continuously campaigned against intolerance overseas even as they’ve abetted or performed it at home. This selective condemnation of intolerance, he shows, created a legacy of foreign policy interventions promoting religious freedom and human rights that was not reflected within America’s own borders. This timely, captivating book forces America to confront its claims of exceptionalism based on religious liberty—and perhaps begin to break the grotesque cycle of projection and oppression.

Russia's brutal February 2022 invasion of Ukraine has attracted widespread condemnation across the West. Government and media circles present the conflict as a simple dichotomy between an evil empire and an innocent victim. In this concise, accessible and highly informative primer, Medea Benjamin and Nicolas Davies insist the picture is more complicated.

Yes, Russia's aggression was reckless and, ultimately, indefensible. But the West's reneging on promises to halt eastward expansion of NATO in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union played a major part in prompting Putin to act. So did the U.S. involvement in the 2014 Ukraine coup and Ukraine's failure to implement the Minsk peace agreements. The result is a conflict that is increasingly difficult to resolve, one that could conceivably escalate into all-out war between the United States and Russia—the world's two leading nuclear powers.

Skillfully bringing together the historical record and current analysis, War in Ukraine looks at the events leading up to the conflict, surveys the different parties involved, and weighs the risks of escalation and opportunities for peace. For anyone who wants to get beneath the heavily propagandized media coverage to an understanding of a war with consequences that could prove cataclysmic, this timely book will be an urgent necessity.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 55 by Francis Story (Anāgārika Sugatānanda), The Scientific Approach to Buddhism and The Appeal of Buddhism, two essays narrated by Christa Michel. The print edition can be found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. 2. The eBook of Bodhi Leaves No. 55 can be downloaded from the BPS website.
Excerpt from The Scientific Approach to Buddhism:
At present it may look as though man has only searched out the secrets of the universe in order to destroy himself with the power he has acquired; and of that there is certainly a danger. But I believe that a change in outlook is beginning to dawn, and that science itself, having destroyed the basis of much wrong thinking, is drawing us ever nearer to the realisation of the truth proclaimed by the Enlightened One. This is what I mean by “the scientific approach to Buddhism;” without being aware of it, the modern scientist and philosopher are being propelled irresistibly in the direction of Buddhism. Their uncertainties and doubts are spiritual “growing pains;” but a time will come quickly when they will realise that, although they have had to reject everything on which their ordinary religious and moral beliefs are founded, there is a higher religion—one based upon systematic investigation and the sincere search for truth—which will restore their lost faith in the universal principles of justice, truth and compassion. Those who now believe that man has come to the end of his tether will then see the opening up of vistas into the future that they only dimly suspect, and will recognise, beyond it all, the final goal of complete emancipation from the fetters of ignorance and delusion.

This is the untold story of an epic theme park mania that roiled East Asia for three decades.
Everyone knows the economic version of the story: Japan, Korea, and China industrialized at lightning speed. These export powerhouse developed mighty infrastructure bases and global conglomerates the envy of the world. Their ascent to economic domination was uncannily sequential.
But fewer realize that each country's path to prosperity has also involved a meandering, hallucinatory path through a theme park. Beginning in the 1990s, Japan, Korea, and China were gripped by a feverish pursuit of theme park grandeur. Over the next 30 years, some of the largest, most fantastical wonderlands ever conceived were built, destroyed, and dreamed.
While all manias reveal human foibles and absurdity, this story is also a deeply human one about unbridled hope and staggering ambition.
