Beschreibung

Ancient Trade Beads explores how seemingly simple beads made by ancient cultures from materials like shells and bones served as vital components in complex economic and social systems. These artifacts offer tangible insights into the lives, skills, and belief systems of past societies, especially those with limited written records. By studying bead-making techniques, we gain insight into the ingenuity of ancient artisans, while examining their use in trade reveals the extent of ancient exchange networks.

The book examines the technologies and processes involved in bead production, highlighting the resourcefulness required to transform raw materials into valuable items. Readers will discover how these beads acted as currency, status markers, and religious items, reflecting the social and spiritual values of indigenous cultures.

The book progresses through an exploration of raw materials, regional variations in bead styles, and an analysis of trade routes, culminating in an examination of the social and symbolic meanings associated with beads. This study adopts an innovative approach, combining detailed artifact analysis with broader theoretical frameworks from anthropology and economics. It moves beyond simple descriptions to explore the social and economic forces that shaped their production, distribution, and use.

Supported by archaeological evidence and ethnographic accounts, Ancient Trade Beads reveals the interconnections and cultural values often overlooked in traditional historical narratives, making it valuable for anyone interested in archaeology, anthropology, and ancient history.

The formation of the European Union (EU) is the result of decades of political, economic, and social evolution, shaped by the aftermath of two World Wars and the desire for long-lasting peace and prosperity in Europe. The idea of a united Europe emerged from the devastation of the Second World War, with leaders recognizing that unity among European nations could prevent future conflicts and create a foundation for collective economic growth.
The origins of European integration can be traced back to the 1950s, following the end of World War II. The primary motivation was the need to secure peace and ensure stability in a continent scarred by war. The first major step in the process was the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. The ECSC, established by the six founding members—Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany—was a pioneering effort in economic cooperation. By pooling coal and steel production, the ECSC aimed to make war between these countries materially impossible, as it would require the cooperation of nations whose economies were intertwined.
The next pivotal moment came in 1957, with the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community (EEC). The Treaty of Rome sought to deepen economic cooperation and foster a common market, removing trade barriers, creating a customs union, and enabling the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people. This was a significant step towards realizing the vision of a unified Europe.

A fresh, concise roadmap for United States grand strategy in a multipolar world For the past thirty years, post–Cold War triumphalism and a desire to reshape the world have defined United States foreign policy. But the failures of the global war on terror, the return of conflict to Europe, and growing tensions with China all suggest that this approach to the world is flawed. For the United States—the country that has ruled the international system largely alone since 1991—this moment is particularly perilous. Can policymakers adapt American foreign policy to better fit the twenty-first century, and in doing so avoid the pitfalls and excesses of the past three decades? In this book, Emma Ashford proposes a return to a more pragmatic, realist set of strategic principles, ones better suited for the emerging multipolar world, that would pursue narrower United States interests, cultivate the capabilities of friendly states, and emphasize room for maneuver over rigid alliances. In this she provides a valuable counterpoint to today's liberal internationalist consensus, as well as a road map for policymakers who seek to change the course of United States foreign policy.

Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Habit Forming traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried Hasheesh Candy, injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement.

The idea of sexual fluidity may seem new, but it is at least as old as the ancient Greeks, who wrote about queer experiences with remarkable frankness, wit, and insight. How to Be Queer is an infatuating collection of these writings about desire, love, and lust between men, between women, and between humans and gods, in lucid and lively new translations.

How to Be Queer starts with Homer's Iliad and moves through lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and biography, drawing on a wide range of authors, including Sappho, Plato, Anacreon, Pindar, Theognis, Aristophanes, and Xenophon. It features both beautiful poetry and thought-provoking prose, emotional outpourings and humorous anecdotes. From Homer's story of the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, one of the most intense between men in world literature, to Sappho's lyrics on the pleasures and pains of loving women, these writings show the many meanings of what the Greeks called eros.

Complete with brief introductions to the selections, How to Be Queer reveals what the Greeks knew long ago—that the erotic and queer are a source of life and a cause for celebration.
