  "What was I supposed to do with my B.A. in literature: gather the sailors around me just before taps and read Faulkner to them as they fell asleep?" 
  Ensign Stephen Davenport was the most severely under qualified of the Ninety-Day Wonders, the derisive term for commissioned officers in the Naval Reserve with only ninety days of training, all of which were on dry land. For his final navigation exam, he actually plotted a course that landed a fictional destroyer somewhere in the Sierra Mountains. Nevertheless, in in August of 1953, he reported to his first assignment aboard the USS Vermillion. He would be overseeing the First Division for training in amphibious landings. 
  Once on ship, Davenport quickly learned that while he held authority in title, respect was less easily learned. The First Division was manned by deckhands who could do things he had no idea how to do - like maneuvering a winch to drop a truck into a landing craft bobbing in the waves thirty feet below without killing the crew, or getting a landing craft on and off a beach through huge surf in the middle of winter. Davenport just called out orders --- and he didn't always feel confident in that either. He fell for dangerous pranks by the crew, permitted an inebriated sailor in his underwear to ride a horse up the gangway, and almost caused a collision at sea. Though he served for only two years, Davenport's time in the Naval Reserve was bizarre, incredible and absolutely unforgettable. 
  At times hilarious, other times scary, Ninety-Day Wonder is the riveting account of dangers, triumphs and fundamental lessons learned aboard ship by an inexperienced officer among far more experienced sailors.

  Gene’s story is brought to life by his son, Ronald, and has humble beginnings in Texas’ “Big Thicket.” It follows the young Gene, born a fifth-generation progeny of East Texas subsistence farmers, and the hardships he endured through the Great Depression which kept him homeless for much of the time he was earning his degree in mathematics and physics. 
  A burning desire to master new challenges led Gene to Los Alamos and a pivotal role in redesigning the Manhattan Project’s atomic bomb. But one scientific challenge wasn’t enough. Gene became an acknowledged expert when computers evolved into another scientific discovery of significant importance. 
  Once again sought after by the federal government, Gene received a congressional appointment to serve as Director of Computation and Analysis in NASA’s manned spaceflight project – the project that enabled Neil Armstrong’s walk on the Moon. 
  As a fitting epilogue to his father’s extraordinary story, the author tells of his own key role in another scientific adaptation when the technology of the World Wide Web was introduced and became known across the globe as the Internet. And the term “startup company” became the scientific phenomenon of the 1990s.

  Rodney grew up during the crack epidemic, with guns, drugs, and the threat of incarceration an accepted part of daily life for nearly everyone he knew. To rent his own apartment, he needed a paycheck—something the money from dealing drugs didn't provide. For that, he took a position in 1992 with a new nonprofit, the Earth Conservation Corps. Gradually, Rodney fell in love with the work to restore and conserve the polluted Anacostia River that flows through DC. The jail sentence sharpened his resolve to get out of the hustling life. With the fierceness of the raptors he had admired for so long, he began to train to become a master falconer and to develop his own raptor education program and sanctuary. Rodney's son Mike, a DC firefighter, has also begun his journey to being a master falconer, with his own kids cheering him along the way.
