Beschreibung

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910) was a painter whose art has been described as a Symbolist and Proto-Expressionist. He exerted a tremendous influence on Russian avant-garde painters. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Vrubel made many trips to Italy and earned his living restoring medieval art treasures. This greatly influenced Vrubel's choice of subject matter, although he was also heavily influenced by the literature of his own country, which was then in full flower. The magnificent full-colour reproductions in this book of the Russian master, whose work deserves to be far better known in the West, will be a revelation to all who are unfamiliar with his work and a delight to the enthusiast.

Living in the shadow of a famous parent is never easy. But having to endure the legacy of a legend whose music and life transformed a nation is even harder. As if the unwanted attention from fans, reporters, and endless onlookers isn't enough, there is intense pressure of expectation to keep up the public image of the parent. Fortunately, there are a few examples of children of celebrities who dare to forge their own identities. While it is never easy and often takes a great deal of struggle and independent thinking, there are examples of success stories. One of the best examples is the life of Hank Williams, Jr.
The story of Hank Williams, Sr. is the tale of a tragic battle between drugs, alcohol, and infidelity. Unable to control his insecurities, Williams drank constantly, and his drunkenness impacted every relationship he had. Yet, the son's story is not the story of the father. While the life of Hank Williams, Jr. is a complex drama of struggle, resurrection, heartbreak, and success; it is a far cry from the self-destructive spiral of the legacy left to him by his father. Today, Hank Williams, Jr. is one of the most famous and admired entertainers of the century, far exceeding the sales and attention bestowed on his father. He has become a legend in his own right who continues to influence the landscape of country music in ways his famous father never could.

Naive art first became popular at the end of the 19th-century. Until that time this form of expression, created by untrained artists and characterised by spontaneity and simplicity, enjoyed little recognition from professional artists and art critics. Influenced by primitive arts, naive painting is distinguished by the fluidity of its lines, vivacity, and joyful colours, as well as by its rather clean-cut, simple shapes. Naive art is represented by such artists as Henri Rousseau, Séraphine de Senlis, André Bauchant, and Camille Bombois. This movement has also found adherents abroad, including such prominent artists as Joan Miró, Guido Vedovato, Niko Pirosmani, and Ivan Generalic.

As one of the most renowned songwriters and producers in the game, Sam Hollander has had multi-platinum success writing and producing for the likes of Panic! At The Disco, Fitz and the Tantrums, Weezer, Katy Perry, Train, One Direction, Blink-182, Daughtry, Ringo Starr, Carole King, Gym Class Heroes, and many others.

But rising up the charts seemed, at many points in his career, highly unlikely. This is his story of failing his way to the top.

Sam Hollander has spent 30 years trudging through the peaks and valleys of a songwriting career. Before he was stacking Billboard hits, he was piling up bad luck, calamitous flops, false starts, and feeling like the world was moving on and up without him while he spun in place. Now he wears his failures like a badge of honor.

In 21-Hit Wonder, he’s collected anecdotes from his weird waltzes around the banquet of pop to help aspiring songwriters and other creatives learn about survival, endurance, scheming, hustle, and the importance of laughing even on the worst days of the journey. Music lovers spanning generations and genres will find stories about many of their heroes and industry icons.

21-Hit Wonder is one part chronicle of a songwriter’s storied career and another part love letter to anyone who has been counted out—from no-hit wonders and one-hit wonders to the novelties and the never-beens—and just needs a bit of inspiration to persevere. Sam’s inspiring story is proof that setbacks are just steps on the road to success.
