Synopsis

"The Portuguese Expedition to Abyssinia in 1541-1543" by Miguel de Castanhoso is a captivating and detailed account of the Portuguese military expedition led to aid the Ethiopian Empire against Muslim invasions in the 16th century. Castanhoso, a Portuguese soldier who took part in this campaign, offers a first-hand perspective on the events, challenges and cultural interactions that marked this historic expedition.

The book begins by describing the geopolitical situation at the time, with the Ethiopian Empire, also known as Abyssinia, under constant threat from Muslim forces led by Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, nicknamed "Gragn". In response to a call for help from the Ethiopian emperor Gelawdewos, the King of Portugal sent an expeditionary force led by Cristóvão da Gama, son of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama.

Castanhoso gives a detailed account of the preparations for the expedition, the perilous journey across the Red Sea and the first contacts with the Ethiopians. He describes the fierce battles, the military strategies employed and the alliances forged between the Portuguese and the Ethiopian forces. The story highlights the courage and determination of Portuguese soldiers in the face of considerable adversity, including difficult terrain, a hostile climate and powerful enemy forces.

Castanhoso's text is rich in detail about the cultural encounters between Europeans and Africans. He describes the customs, traditions and religious practices of the Ethiopians, offering valuable insights into daily life and society at the time. These descriptions enhance understanding of cross-cultural interactions and how these relationships influenced the course of the expedition.

The book concludes with a description of the decisive battle of Wayna Daga, where the combined forces of the Portuguese and Ethiopians succeeded in defeating Gragn's army. This victory marks a crucial turning point in the safeguarding of the Ethiopian Empire and underlines the importance of Portuguese military assistance.

"The Portuguese Expedition to Abyssinia in 1541-1543" is not only an essential historical testimony, but also an epic adventure that illustrates the challenges and triumphs of this military mission. Castanhoso's narrative, with its lively, detailed style, offers readers a complete immersion in a fascinating episode in world history.

Defectors fleeing the Soviet Union seized the world's attention during the Cold War. Their stories were given sensational news coverage and dramatized in spy novels and films. Upon reaching the West, they were entitled to special benefits, including financial assistance and permanent residency. In contrast to other migrants, defectors were pursued by the states they left even as they were eagerly sought by the United States and its allies. Taking part in a risky game that played out across the globe, defectors sought to transcend the limitations of the Cold War world.

Defectors follows their treacherous journeys and looks at how their unauthorized flight via land, sea, and air gave shape to a globalized world. It charts a global struggle over defectors that unfolded among rival intelligence agencies operating in the shadows of an occupied Europe, in the forbidden border zones of the USSR, in the disputed straits of the South China Sea, on a hijacked plane 10,000 feet in the air, and around the walls of Soviet embassies.

Although defection all but disappeared after the Cold War, this innovative work shows how it shaped the governance of global borders and helped forge an international refugee system whose legacy and limitations remain with us to this day.

Populism, a term often used in modern political discourse, refers to movements or ideologies that seek to represent the interests of ordinary people, often contrasting with the perceived elite or establishment. Understanding the origins of populism requires exploring both its historical roots and its evolution over time. Though its contemporary forms are often associated with charismatic leaders and mass mobilization, populism has a deep and complex history that spans several centuries.
Historically, populism can trace its roots back to the late 19th century, when agrarian movements in the United States and Russia first used the term. The Populist Party, founded in the U.S. in 1891, advocated for the interests of farmers who felt exploited by industrial elites and urban centers. In Russia, the narodniks, or "people's movement," emerged around the same time, focusing on the belief that Russia’s future lay in the empowerment of the peasantry. These early populist movements were fueled by economic and social inequalities, with the central grievance being the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few.
The core tenet of these early populist movements was the idea of a moral divide between the "pure" common people and the corrupt elites. This populist rhetoric resonated strongly with those who felt neglected by the political establishment, emphasizing a deep distrust of centralized political systems and economic power. Populism, then, was not simply about policy disagreements but a call for a deeper cultural and moral reckoning with societal inequalities.

It's time for America to get back in the international leadership game.

What should our global strategy look like in an age of renewed great power competition? And what must America offer to a newly empowered developing world when we're no longer the only major player?

In The American Imperative, international development expert Daniel Runde makes the case for building a new global consensus through vigorous internationalism and the judicious use of soft power. Runde maps out many of the steps that we need to take—primarily in the non-military sphere—to ensure an alliance of stable and secure, like-minded, self-reliant partner nations in order to prevent rising authoritarian powers such as China from running the world.

Cover Art Photo: Ronald Reagan giving his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention at Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan. July 17, 1980.
In his acceptance speech, Reagan envisioned “a new consensus with all those across the land who share a community of values embodied in these words: family, work, neighborhood, peace and freedom.” Reagan’s acceptance focuses on “three grave threats to our very existence, any one of which could destroy us. We face a disintegrating economy, a weakened defense and an energy policy based on the sharing of scarcity.”
Reagan places responsibility on the “Democratic party leadership-in the White House and in Congress-for this unprecedented calamity which has befallen us.” He says his first act will be “to impose an immediate and thorough freeze on federal hiring” and “to conduct a detailed review of every department, bureau and agency that lives by federal appropriation.” Reagan calls for “a 30 percent reduction in income tax rates over a period of three years” and reminds us that “every major tax cut in this century has strengthened the economy, generated renewed productivity and ended up yielding new revenues for the government”.
On the issue of national defense, Reagan asserts that we “know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted.” While calling for a strong military, Reagan reiterates his long-held belief that government is too big and the “time is now to limit federal spending; to insist on a stable monetary reform and to free ourselves from imported oil.”

  • The Great Global Transformation - The United States China and the Remaking of the World Economic Order - cover

    The Great Global Transformation...

    Branko Milanovic

From the essential chronicler of the world economy, a portrait of the Great Powers in transition.

The world’s two great economic powers are on opposite trajectories. In the United States, decades of neoliberal policies produced a small class of rich elites and gutted the middle class. In China, the same global forces have created a massive new upper class. The result is the greatest reshuffling of global incomes since the Industrial Revolution—a dramatic shakeup of each country’s political order. As the two powers retreat from one another, the implications for their futures, and for the world economy, are uncertain.

In The Great Global Transformation, acclaimed economist Branko Milanovic draws on original research to chart how these seismic shifts will shape the next century of the global economy. As both the US and China retreat into protectionism, Milanovic shows how a new and multipolar world order will follow—and how rising nationalism will have dramatically different effects on the two countries. And he shows us the fight ahead: as plutocracy returns, global war threatens, and a new system silently shapes our nations, driving populist discontent to the breaking point.

A worthy successor to Capitalism, Alone and his other landmark works, Milanovic’s new book announces the arrival of a new era he terms “national market liberalism,” in which liberalism survives in domestic economies, but not necessarily in the social arena. The Great Global Transformation is Milanovic’s indispensable account of the new twenty-first century now underway.
