Summary

This engaging biography of Sidney and Beatrice Webb, ‘Unceasing War on Poverty’, takes the reader into the world of the Webbs, the remarkable couple who changed Britain, inspiring a generation to fight for a better society.
Born in the 1850s, they came from very different backgrounds. They married in 1892 - but only after Beatrice had previously experienced a long, unhappy relationship. Their fifty-year partnership produced books and reports rather than children. Many of the reforms the Webbs demanded were enacted after their deaths. The hated Poor Law was abolished, and a National Health Service was established, transforming millions of lives. Michael Ward’s fascinating book details their methods: meticulous research, private persuasion and hospitality, barnstorming public campaigning, and hard political organisation. They created and shaped institutions - the Fabian Society, the London School of Economics, and the ‘New Statesman’ - which flourish to this day. Their work is central to understanding change in twentieth century British politics and society.

In Earned, NHL legend Chris Pronger reveals the hard truth behind greatness—that talent opens doors, but only relentless standards, ownership, and grit keep them open.
    Success isn’t owed—it’s earned.
In the high-stakes world of professional hockey, talent alone doesn’t cut it. Chris Pronger—one of the NHL’s most dominant and controversial defensemen—learned that the hard way. In Earned: The True Cost of Greatness from One of Hockey’s Fiercest Competitors, he reveals the raw truth behind an eighteen-year career defined by triumph, adversity, and transformation
From being booed by his own fans in Hartford and St. Louis as a twenty-year-old phenom to hoisting the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007, Pronger’s journey was anything but smooth. A Hockey Hall of Famer, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Hart Trophy winner, he shares what the stats don’t show: the relentless standards and hard lessons that forged his success.
At the heart of Earned is a simple question—“What are your standards?”—that fueled Pronger’s evolution from underachiever to champion. Through gripping stories of betting on himself, surviving brutal trades, enduring career-ending injuries, and reinventing himself as an entrepreneur, Pronger distills a powerful formula: Standards + Adversity + Ownership = Success.
This isn’t just a hockey memoir—it’s a playbook for excellence in any arena. Pronger opens up about rebuilding his family life, quitting drinking, and living by his Difference Maker’s Code. Packed with insider stories, motivational insights, and practical tools like the 30-Day Standards Challenge, Earned will push you to raise your game.
As Pronger says, “Talent opens doors. Standards keep them open.”
If you’re ready to own your story and earn your success, this is your guide.

Eileen Garvin’s older sister, Margaret, was diagnosed with severe autism at age three. Growing up alongside Margaret wasn’t easy: Eileen often found herself in situations that were simultaneously awkward, hilarious, and heartbreaking. For example, losing a blue plastic hairbrush could leave Margaret inconsolable for hours, and a quiet Sunday Mass might provoke an outburst of laughter, swearing, or dancing. How to Be a Sister begins when Eileen, after several years in New Mexico, has just moved back to the Pacific Northwest, where she grew up. Being 1,600 miles away allowed Eileen to avoid the question that has dogged her since birth: What is she going to do about Margaret? Now, Eileen must grapple with this question once again as she tentatively tries to reconnect with Margaret. How can she have a relationship with someone who can’t drive, send an email, or use a telephone? What role will Eileen play in Margaret’s life as their parents age, and after they die? Will she remain in Margaret’s life, or will she walk away? A deeply felt, impeccably written memoir, How to Be a Sister will speak to siblings, parents, friends, and teachers of people with autism—and to anyone who sometimes struggles to connect with someone difficult or different.

I endured an incredibly challenging journey while becoming a mother of three with the man I once believed was my true love and lifelong partner. Through the life stories of my heroine, Jennie Lee – based on my own experiences – I share the excruciating reality of my struggles in Stand Up. I hope to inspire anyone who may be in an abusive relationship to take control of their choices and everyone else to recognise the clues and be aware of how difficult it is to extract oneself and encourage the offer of support to those suffering at the hands of an abuser, whatever it takes, however difficult it may feel. Now, I am free. I live in London, writing, working in the local pub and hanging out with my family as much as possible.

...these kids were born with a smile on their faces to two loving parents. I thought it was there for good. Then dark clouds started gathering in the Northumbrian sky. They became entangled in a justice system regulated and controlled by a right-wing, feminist cartel that wiped the grin off their faces. This book came about as a testament to the unconditional love between a father and his children; it is nothing less than a solemn promise of a father who vows never to be able to rest until he puts a smile back on their faces.
