Summary

Professor Arthur Lash, born Artur Lasch in pre-war Austria, takes his American wife and their three sons back to Vienna, in 1960, to see how well his father is
rebuilding his life after regaining the factory stolen from him when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938.

For Arthur, the journey helps him re-establish his links with the city he was brought up in; for the rest of his family, their European holiday triggers emotions of a very different kind—secret longings, near disasters and absurd mishaps—all disruptive in different ways, and all watched over by their wise but needy and uninvited travelling companion, Mrs. Woodbine, the family nanny.

A masterly piece of writing.
Available since: 10/07/2024.
Print length: 272 pages.

The traumatized central character of J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace is provocatively reimagined in this “surprising, subtle, and deeply challenging” novel (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Two years ago, Lucy Lurie was the victim of an act of sexual violence that devastated her life. Afterwards, she becomes obsessed with the author John Coetzee, whose acclaimed novel turned her brutal assault into a literary metaphor. Withdrawn and fearful of crowds, Lucy nonetheless makes occasional forays into the world of men in her search for Coetzee himself. She means to confront him.

The Lucy in his novel, Disgrace, is passive and almost entirely lacking agency. Lucy means to right the record, for she is the lacuna that Coetzee left in his novel—the missing piece of the puzzle. Lucy plans to put herself back in the story, to assert her agency and identity. For Lucy Lurie will be no man’s lacuna. Lacuna is both a powerful feminist reply to the book considered to be Coetzee’s masterwork, and the moving story of one woman’s attempt to reclaim her identity after trauma.

Lady Duxter's husband rallies quickly from the double tragedy-too quickly, it is murmured in the village. Having already planned a writer's retreat at his manor house, he insists the show must go on. But when a young girl goes missing and a crime writer becomes a target, DCI Cotton asks Max to lend his MI5 expertise to the investigation. Many suspects emerge as the scope of the investigation widens beyond the writers to villagers who have crossed swords with the insufferably smug crime author. Soon Max begins to wonder if the attack on the writer was part of a broader conspiracy...
