Synopsis

From a British Golden Age author “in a class by himself among detective story writers,” Scotland Yard Inspector Appleby helps a student solve a murder (The Times Literary Supplement).

On holiday in the English countryside with his fellow university students, young David Henchman sets out alone for a hike across the moor. But instead of finding tranquil solitude, he stumbles upon a dead body. At first, David suspects suicide—until he spots a stranger on the moor. At the sound of gunfire, David flees for his life.

Once Inspector Appleby heads to the moors, it seems as if Scotland Yard’s most respected detective might have the matter in hand. But things go south when Appleby discovers the corpse on the moor has been swapped with another dead body. With the investigation underway, are Appleby and David bound to become victims of some perilous game?

Six passengers in a locked train carriage. One of them is dead. No one saw a thing.

Former Detective Hillary Greene is off on holiday. For a blissful two weeks, her life will be free of murder victims, murder suspects — and, best of all, no paperwork. She’s heading for the beautiful Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye, where she plans to spend her time browsing old bookshops and generally relaxing.

Hillary arrives at the picturesque Riverside Inn where the other guests are an eclectic bunch: a charming Irishman, a rich American and his spoilt daughter, a thrice-married Canadian influencer, a wealthy widow and a taciturn taxidermist.

The next day, Hillary and her fellow guests set off on a steam train ride through the stunning Cambrian Mountains. But when the train arrives at its final destination, not all the passengers get off.

One of them has been stabbed neatly and cleanly through the heart.

Which of the five passengers who shared the carriage is the killer? And how come no one saw a thing . . . ?

"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924) is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and one of the 12 stories collected as The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
Sir James Damery comes to see Holmes and Watson about his illustrious client's problem (the client's identity is never revealed to the reader, although Watson finds out at the end of the story; it is heavily implied to be King Edward VII). General de Merville's young daughter Violet has fallen in love with the roguish and sadistic Austrian Baron Adelbert Gruner, who Damery and Holmes are convinced is a shameless philanderer and a murderer. The victim was his last wife, of whose murder he was acquitted owing to a legal technicality and a witness's untimely death. She met her end in the Splügen Pass. Holmes also finds out that the Baron has expensive tastes and is a collector and a recognised authority on Chinese pottery.
