Synopsis

"A deftly crafted thriller that kept me turning pages---through politics, money, and murder---to the ending I didn't see coming." - Chris DeRose, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Fighting Bunch.A political thriller, tied in to real events, about an apocalyptic threat to America that is ticking remorselessly in the background while Americans continue their daily routines, oblivious to the danger. For years, China's spy agency has been watching the United States rack up trillions of dollars in debt, waiting for the right moment to weaponize that debt to collapse the American government and install a Communist puppet regime. At the same time, suburban accountant Andrea Gartner has been an outspoken critic of the debt as a leader in the South Carolina state Republican Party. When the United States elects President Earl Murray, he brings Andrea into his government as budget director to solve America's debt problem. But before the nameplate is even installed on her office door, China strikes, engineering an American debt crisis that brings the country to the brink of collapse. Government operations come to a screeching halt. With the American hegemon on its knees, China violently seizes the opportunity to fulfill its territorial ambitions in Taiwan and the South China Sea.Thrust into the rapacious, cutthroat world of American politics and surrounded by crises on all sides, Andrea begins a desperate effort to save the United States. Arrayed against her are cynical politicians and belligerent military brass, some of whom just might be secret Chinese agents. Will Andrea be able to keep the United States alive to fight another day? Or will America drown in a sea of red ink at the hands of the Chinese and see its democratic government replaced by a Chinese Communist puppet regime?American life as we know it is about to be obliterated by a debt bomb. And the only person who can save the country is a suburban accountant.

    A Charlene Parker mystery.
Set mostly in northern Ontario at a cottage resort and partly in rural Nova Scotia, A Kayak for One (book 1 in the Kirk Lake Camp series ) features a former Hamilton police detective who would like most of all to just do the never ending everyday chores of running a resort but who seems to end up having to solve murders instead.
As if that isn't enough the former detective, Charlene Parker, also has to deal with creepy peeping Bob across the lake, the local OPP detective Sarah who has issues to no end that Charlene must hear about, a bagpipe playing lover across town, an old house to fix up across the country on the east coast and with all that still find time to cook for herself and half the police detachment while they poke about the resort trying to solve the murders before Charlene does.
It's enough to make Charlene want to head south back to a dark alley in the north end of Hamilton to chase a criminal in a hoodie (always a hoodie), with a gun, who is too scary, too mean, too drunk, too stoned, too hilarious, too stupid and too close. Thank goodness she has time to unwind every now and then with a good Cape Breton single malt whisky.
What could go wrong this season when a professor and geology students rent a few cottages as a base for field work in the area? They're educated young adults led by an experienced professor. Everyone could get along and hunker down and focus on the purpose of the trip, a 10 day advanced course, a study of the unique rock formations in northern Ontario. It's near the end of the tourist season and relief from working long days for long weeks for long months is almost palatable for the former detective turned resort owner. How much work or trouble could the students be for Charlene? Will it be a peaceful end to the busy summer season...for a change? Will it end without a murder ... for a change?

Except Pedley's not the only one searching for the books. Wilhelm Hoffmann, of Nazi ancestry, has already purchased several books from the lost collection and has no intention of stopping. After Pedley is beaten, abducted, and left to die, he realizes little of this is about rare books.
A stack of old WWII letters lead Pedley to a British Lieutenant and his driver who were in Bavaria in 1945 and to the greatest discovery of post-WWII. Confident he has the mystery figured out, the search leads Pedley to the basement of a house that hasn't been unoccupied for more than eight years.
