Synopsis

World War Aftermath explores the wide-ranging consequences of World War I and World War II, examining their enduring impact on global stability across economic, political, and social domains. The book argues that these conflicts laid the groundwork for the international systems and societal structures that continue to shape global dynamics, providing a crucial lens for understanding today's interconnected world. One intriguing aspect is the analysis of how post-war recovery plans, like the Marshall Plan, fostered economic interdependence and reshaped global trade networks. Another highlight is the examination of how the wars spurred decolonization movements and reshaped the political landscape, leading to the rise of new global powers and the ideological battles of the Cold War.

The book progresses through three key thematic areas: economic restructuring, political realignments, and social transformations. It begins by detailing the immediate post-war economic devastation and then analyzes the shifts in the global political order, focusing on the rise of superpowers and the formation of the United Nations. Finally, it addresses societal changes, including shifts in gender roles and the rise of consumer culture.

By integrating these three areas, World War Aftermath offers a comprehensive analysis, demonstrating how economic policies influenced political alignments and social transformations, and vice versa, contributing to debates on the effectiveness of international institutions and the long-term consequences of war.

What does it mean to belong? In The Land is Sung, musicologist Thomas M. Pooley shows how performances of song, dance, and praise poetry connect Zulu communities to their ancestral homes and genealogies. For those without land tenure in the province of KwaZulu-Nata, performances articulate a sense of place. Migrants express their allegiances through performance and spiritual relationships to land are embodied in rituals that invoke ancestral connection while advancing well-being through intergenerational communication. Engaging with justice and environmental ethics, education and indigenous knowledge systems, musical and linguistic analysis, and the ethics of recording practice, Pooley's analysis draws on genres of music and dance recorded in the midlands and borderlands of South Africa, and in Johannesburg's inner city. His detailed sound writing captures the visceral experiences of performances in everyday life. The book is richly illustrated and there is a companion website featuring both video and audio examples.

Today people more than ever are overwhelmed by worry about current events. Why are some people devoured by hatred and bigotry? Can we avoid the next economic crisis? Can we prevent the next global war? Will computers take over our civilization any time soon? Even though Vertical Progress does not have all answers, it provides readers with plenty of new ideas to open the debate. Vertical Progress offers a hypothesis and rationale that provides not only a different look at past events but also explains much of what is happening now. The book sees the human society as a well-designed, complex information system that has a single purpose—to build a collective knowledge. Using results of the computer simulations author demonstrating that as just a heard of collaborative individuals, the society would not be able to make any substantial progress. The book logically connects the latest achievements of science with the findings of the computer simulation experiment to lead readers to the inevitable conclusion—the social information system would not make any progress unless it operates with more than one type of nodes. Hence, the author suggests that our civilization consists of more than one human kind.

One Sunday in 2001 ear, nose and throat specialist Dr Peter Friedland received an unexpected call from Nelson Mandela's personal physician. The former president was struggling to hear. Could Peter visit him at home?
Friedland discovered that Mandela was using antiquated hearing aids and was struggling to maintain them. Soon he became a regular visitor to Mandela's home in Houghton where he experienced the elderly statesman, in the frailty of old age, away from the crowds. He was full of stories and always bearing a lesson.
But outside Mandela's quiet house, Friedland's life was ricocheting from treating one victim of violent crime to another. On many days he worked as a head and neck trauma surgeon and found himself drawn into the victims' families. When his own family and friends were exposed to violent crime, he was driven to make a life-changing decision.
In Quiet Time with the President, Friedland also examines the powerful forces that push people away from South Africa and those that pull them back. Telling his famous patient that he was planning to leave the country was insurmountably difficult for Friedland, but Mandela surprised him.
He'd accept his leaving, but on one condition . . .

Aion is one of the major works of C.G. Jung's later years.

The title comes from the Greek word for aeon or age and refers to the age of Christianity, for, in Aion, Jung is concerned with the collective psychic development that the Christian era represents. How did it come about when it did? What psychic change did it represent? In exploring these questions, Jung (1875-1961) draws upon Christian symbolism and, in particular, the figure of Christ as a case study in the archetype of the Self.

The book begins with an account of the important concepts of the ego, the shadow and the anima/animus (here referred to as the syzygy). Jung then continues with his exploration of the Self archetype as represented through Christian symbolism and the figure of Christ. In particular, a discussion and critique of the Christian view of evil is provided. The symbolism of the fish, which recurs as a symbol of both Christ and of the devil, is examined in detail and a wide range of alchemical, pagan and gnostic material is drawn upon. The final chapter of the book proposes a model for the structure of the Self.

Aion is one of the most important volumes of the Collected Works and complements The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious. Translated by R. F. C.Hull.
