Synopsis

Protected Area Boundaries explores the pivotal role of clearly defined and enforced boundaries in environmental protection, particularly for national parks and wildlife reserves. It argues that effective conservation depends not just on environmental law, but on the practical application and acceptance of these boundaries. A key insight is that precise boundaries mitigate environmental degradation by separating conservation areas from exploitation zones. The book examines how clarity in boundary demarcation directly reduces encroachment and illegal resource extraction, thereby safeguarding the integrity of protected areas.

The book progresses from foundational legal concepts to practical enforcement challenges and future strategies. It dissects real-world case studies, highlighting the complexities of balancing land use, indigenous rights, and economic pressures. The book uniquely emphasizes the importance of community involvement and transparent governance.

Furthermore, it addresses innovative approaches like buffer zones and the use of GIS technology for enhanced monitoring in an era defined by climate change and increasing population. This book offers significant value by providing a comprehensive understanding of the social, legal, and ecological constructs of protected area boundaries. It connects environmental law with geography, sociology, and economics, offering a nuanced perspective for environmental lawyers, policymakers, and conservation professionals.

By using comparative legal analysis, the book examines different legal systems and their approaches to boundary enforcement, making it a practical guide for improving boundary management practices and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources.

"Snapshots of truth . . . Blatty drew the portraits of veterans with love and honesty . . . fearless, furious, broken, hopeless, hopeful, undeterred as forces of nature. It's so easy to start romanticizing them, especially the fallen ones, yet Blatty respects them too much to turn these courageous spirits into cardboard heroes. They are humans instead, with all their follies, anger, broken hearts, and broken lives. The power of a great book is that it stays with you long after you finish reading. It's been ten years since Russians occupied my hometown. It's two years since my whole country turned into a war zone . . . in the fog of the war, these snapshots of truth are as rare as beams of light." —Tetyana Strelchenko, director of America House, Kyiv, UkraineLike many post-9/11 combat veterans, JT Blatty struggled to regain her sense of purpose in the first years returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2018, a chance encounter brought her to Ukraine, drawn in by the familiarity of war and those who serve in wars. Over five years, JT captured the oral history and portraits of a tribe of revolutionaries, the Donbas volunteer soldiers. As she embedded with them on the front line in bunkers and forests, and in Kyiv flats, JT's story began to blend with theirs in a universal bond of combat veterans, compelling her to stay as a new war began.

In the aftermath of Rome's collapse, a forgotten boy emperor returns not to reclaim the throne—but to reinvent what it means to rule.
Rome Reborn follows the extraordinary transformation of Romulus II, a discarded figure in the shadow of empire, who dares to rebuild the West not through legions, but through law, unity, and reform. As warlords claim kingdoms and old cities decay, Romulus breathes life into a fragile republic formed from shattered provinces and weary citizens.
From forging an accord with the Goths to reuniting East and West through diplomacy, and reviving Latin as a living tongue, Romulus steers a new kind of Roman state—one built on pluralism, merit, and civil resilience. But the past is never far behind. With Odoacer watching, power consolidating in Italy, and threats looming from all sides, the republic survives not through conquest, but through radical vision and political courage.
This first volume in the Twilight Reshaped series tells the alternate story of a Rome that didn't fall completely—but reshaped itself at the edge of the world.

    Titus Livius

Ab urbe condita, is a monumental history of ancient Rome written in the Latin language by Titus Livius(Livy), an ancient Roman historian. The work covers the time from the stories of Aeneas, the earliest legendary period from before the city's founding in c. 753 BC, to Livy's own times in the reign of the emperor, Augustus. The last year covered by Livy is 745 AUC, or 9 BC, the death of Drusus. About 25% of the work survives.Livy's History of Rome was in demand from the publication of the first packet. Livy became so famous that a man from Cadiz travelled to Rome just to see him, and once he had seen, returned home. The popularity of the work continued through the entire classical period. A number of Roman authors used Livy, including Aurelius Victor, Cassiodorus, Eutropius, Festus, Florus, Granius Licinianus and Orosius.Livy wrote during the reign of Augustus, who came to power after a civil war with generals and consuls claiming to be defending the Roman Republic. Livy's enthusiasm for the republic is evident from the first pentade of his work, and yet the Julio-Claudian family were as much fans of Livy as anyone. Livy must have been viewed as a harmless and irrelevant advocate of the ancient morality, which was a known public stance of the citizens of Patavium.During the Middle Ages interest in Livy fell off. Due to the length of the work the literate class were already reading summaries rather than the work itself, which was tedious to copy, expensive, and required a lot of storage space. It must have been during this period, if not before, that MSS began to be lost without replacement. The Renaissance was a time of intense revival; the population discovered that Livy was being lost and large amounts of money changed hands in the rush to collect Livy manuscripts. The poet, Beccadelli, sold a country home for the money to purchase one manuscript copied by Poggio. Petrarch and Pope Nicholas V launched a search for the now missing books. Laurentius Valla published an emended text initiating the field of Livy scholarship. Dante speaks highly of him in his poetry, and Francis I of France commissioned extensive artwork treating Livian themes; Niccolò Machiavelli's work on republics, the Discourses on Livy is presented as a commentary on the History of Rome. Respect for Livy rose to lofty heights. (Summary adapted from Wikipaedia by Karen Merline.)

The Owl and the Nightingale - A...

Simon Armitage narrates a complete verse translation of this spirited and humorous medieval English poem
The Owl and the Nightingale, one of the earliest literary works in Middle English, is a lively, anonymous comic poem about two birds who embark on a war of words in a wood, with a nearby poet reporting their argument in rhyming couplets, line by line and blow by blow. In this engaging and energetic verse translation, Simon Armitage captures the verve and humor of this dramatic tale with all the cut and thrust of the original.

In an agile iambic tetrameter that skillfully amplifies the prosody and rhythm of the original, Armitage's translation moves entertainingly from the eloquent and philosophical to the ribald and ridiculous. Sounding at times like antagonists in a Twitter feud, the owl and the nightingale quarrel about a host of subjects that still resonate today—including love, marriage, identity, cultural background, class distinctions, and the right to be heard. Adding to the playful, raucous mood of the barb-trading birds is Armitage, who at one point inserts himself into the poem as a "magistrate . . . to adjudicate"—one who is "skilled with words & worldly wise / & frowns on every form of vice."

Featuring the Middle English text on facing pages and an introduction by Armitage, this volume will delight readers of all ages.
